This is the bike for a rider who wants one machine to cover commuting, errands, and weekend roads without compromise. The honest caveat: it sits far wider between your legs than a normal scooter, the automatic is genuinely tricky to feather at a crawl, and there's a recall covering ECU overheating that can drop the gearbox into limp mode, so confirm the fix before you buy.

On the road the fairing earns its keep, pushing weather off you across a long, mixed day, and even riding through standing water your feet stay mostly dry. Comfort here is a trade you should understand going in. The bodywork does real work: a full day of shifting weather passes and I step off without the wind and rain having worn me thin. I'll flag the pillion seat as well, since a second rider here isn't silently counting down to the next stop the way they do on so many machines that claim to welcome a passenger. What the X-ADV wants back from you is stature. It carries much more width between your thighs than a standard maxi-scooter and rides higher on longer suspension, so anyone short in the leg registers it at a standstill and underway alike, and the effortless feet-flat security of a low scooter simply isn't on offer. If you're average height or above, it melts away and you stop thinking about it. If you're on the smaller side, that reach stays with you as a permanent condition of ownership rather than a first-week adjustment.
This one comes down to a single, clear point. The dual-clutch is simply a more efficient way to send the engine's work to the road than a belt-type automatic, and that turns up as fuel that stretches further. It isn't a novelty you clock once and forget; the saving repeats on every commute until the gaps between fill-ups make the case on their own. On a bike you ride every day, that sort of quiet, sensible engineering is exactly what keeps you happy with it for the long haul.
The measure of a genuine do-it-all bike is a chaotic day, and the X-ADV keeps passing that test. One run of mine chained a stop at the office, a lap of city errands, a gravel detour out to an orchard, a loaded haul of the kids across town to a sports complex, and a hard sprint to catch an airport meeting, all on this single machine and never once leaving me wishing I'd wheeled out something better matched to the job. When a day won't commit to one purpose, this is what I pull from a garage that offers me plenty of alternatives. Credit the luggage that comes built in: nothing to bolt on, nothing to strip off, you set out with your arms full and think nothing of it. The compartment under the seat holds more than I'd have wagered. My one honest caveat is comparative. Come off a purpose-built scooter and both that space and the deck under your feet will feel stingy, and you'll register the gap.
Two things stuck with me. First, the chunky tread and long travel don't rob it of composure; run a fast, twisting road and it holds its line, the mass and the build working for you. Second, and more surprising, is where it'll go loaded. Put a passenger on, drop onto a narrow, poorly-kept track, and it stays planted where most scooters would flounder. The best roads I know often aren't paved, and this one doesn't make me skip them.
Left in D for solo town and highway runs, the gearbox drops out of mind and simply gets on with it. The modes earn their keep once the ask gets harder: two-up, overtaking on a two-laner, or stringing hairpins, and reaching for Sport or full manual sharpens the response, something I feel rather than read off a spec sheet. Nearly every shift is still handled for me; what counts is owning the few that matter. On grunt it suits most of my riding, though a long, hard cruise starts finding its ceiling.
What surprised me most is that an easy bike turned out to be a serious one. Nothing about the X-ADV tries to catch you out in the opening miles; it asks nothing and springs no bad habits. Go deeper, though, and there's real substance under the ease: the assembly feels properly built, the motor makes a sound with genuine character, and the chassis stays settled enough that you keep asking more of it. Tight switchbacks turned into a stretch I hunted for rather than tolerated, since the automatic clears away most of the mental juggling and leaves the good part, reading a line and committing to it. Set against a belt-driven automatic, the dual-clutch feels a rung up, cleaner and more willing under power, less a passenger shuttle and more a motorcycle doing as it's told. My running gripe is that the transmission can't read the road ahead; it repeats the same mistimed upshift on a corner I've memorized and never adapts. It does so much so well that I hold it to a high bar, which is exactly what makes this lone blind spot sting.
Sort through the messages riders send after a season on one, the notes owners swap when they compare bikes, and the threads I keep half an eye on, and the same shape forms every time. People end up trusting this machine, and where they push back, it comes down to how big it is.
The parallel twin earns the warmest words: strong pull down low, still smooth wound out, and economy owners notice at the pump. Right behind it, the automatic gets credit for making stop-and-go traffic painless, while still handing control back the moment a rider wants to change gear themselves. Plenty are struck by how lightly the chassis turns for its weight, holding a clean, neutral line. The Honda build people expect and the helmet-sized space under the seat fill in the rest.
The complaints come back to size. Pushing it at a crawl or shuffling it in a parking spot, owners feel the weight, and they concede the tough looks promise more off-road than the bike backs up, with smooth gravel about as far as it goes. Shorter riders point to the tall seat, where the drop to the ground and the width underfoot keep them on tiptoe.
ECU overheating causes gearbox failure (limp mode)
When ridden at low speeds or in high ambient temperatures, the ECU's PPTC module overheats, triggering a fail-safe mode. This can prevent gear changes, illuminate the engine warning light, and cause loss of drive. A factory recall was issued for models built between January 2017 and October 2018 to replace the ECU.
