690 Enduro R (MY2019)

Single-Cylinder Trail Weapon

The Machine's Character

The 690 Enduro R is what you get when KTM takes a big single seriously. The 693 cc LC4 makes 75 hp and 54 lb-ft and runs through KTM Ride-by-Wire with selectable engine maps, a slipper clutch and a quickshifter that works both up and down. Add cornering ABS and traction control and you've got a rider-aid package most singles never come close to. The chassis is pure enduro: a steel trellis frame, a WP XPLOR Split-Cartridge Fork and a WP XPLOR shock, with 9.8 in (250 mm) of travel at each end, all of it adjustable. It sits right on the seam between hard enduro and light adventure bike. That's its whole point.

This is a tool, not a sofa. It wants an experienced rider who knows what to do with 10.4 in (265 mm) of ground clearance and a 21-inch front wheel, and who doesn't mind a 36.8 in (935 mm) seat. Ride it that way and it goes deep into technical terrain, then still gets you home on pavement. The honest caveat is the electrics. The in-tank fuel pump is a known weak spot, stators and wiring looms can play up, and LC4 bikes built from 2018 to 2020 are covered by a recall for an electrical/fuel system fault. Check that paperwork before you buy. Then pack a spare pump.

Known issues

  • LC4 recall (MY 2018-2020) – electrical/fuel system

    drivetrain rare Recall

KTM issued a recall for LC4 models built between 2018 and 2020 due to a potential fault in the electrical/fuel system that could cause engine stalling or loss of power.

  • Fuel pump prone to failure

    fuel system common

The in-tank fuel pump is a common failure point, often triggered by contaminated fuel or heat, causing the bike to stall or not start. Many owners carry a spare or replace with an aftermarket unit.

  • Electrical gremlins (stator, wiring loom)

    electrics occasional

Corroded connectors, failing stators, and chafed wiring looms have been reported, causing intermittent electrical cutouts and charging system failures.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 690 Enduro R is actually built for.

Factory Butte in Utah's high desert badlands, captured in daylight under clear blue sky. The formation's distinctive multi-colored strata and steep erosional gullies dominate the frame. Arid terrain with minimal vegetation stretches across the foreground and background. Typical American Southwest landscape.

Best motorcycle for Moab?

This is your bike. The long-travel adjustable WP suspension and 10.4 in of clearance make it right at home on slickrock and sand, and you ride to the trailhead. Keep a spare fuel pump in the pack.

Best motocross bike for Loretta Lynns?

Straight talk: it's a street-legal enduro with lights, ABS and a tank for distance, not a 450F. It'll be a blast on a practice day, but your race bike stays in the van on race day.

Best motorcycle for BDR routes?

If the dirt matters more to you than luggage, it's a sharp BDR tool. Just plan your fuel stops around the 3.5 gal (13.3 L) tank, and know that you give up comfort and cargo space for that trail bite.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this KTM 690 Enduro R. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
