701 Enduro LR (MY2020+)

The Long-Haul Dirt Weapon

The Machine's Character

The LR takes the 693 cc liquid-cooled single and wraps a twin-tank fuel system around it, 6.6 gallons (25 L) in total, so the design target is better than 310 miles (500 km) between fuel stops. Underneath sits the lightweight trellis frame and fully adjustable WP XPLOR suspension, with 9.8 inches (250 mm) of travel at both ends and 10.6 inches (270 mm) of ground clearance. ABS, cornering ABS, traction control and ride modes are standard, along with an LED headlight. It is a street-legal enduro carrying an adventure bike's reach without an adventure bike's bulk.

Numbers first: 74 hp at 8,000 rpm and 52 lb-ft at 6,750 rpm, moving very little motorcycle. On a machine this narrow that is plenty, and the useful part is the torque figure rather than the peak. It suits a rider who already has real dirt skill and wants to disappear for a couple of days without a chase truck or a fuel plan built around gas stations. The honest caveat is size. At 36.4 inches (925 mm) the seat is tall by any standard, and with all 6.6 gallons on board you feel every one of them until you have burned an hour of fuel off.

The test ride

The first thing that registers is the beat. A big single thumps at idle, and at a steady highway pace it sends a fine buzz through the pegs and the grips that your palms still remember an hour later. Sitting on it, everything reads dirt bike: narrow between the knees, a long reach down to the ground, bars wide enough that you find yourself standing up almost without deciding to. The 21-inch front does what a 21 always does, giving the steering a slow, deliberate feel on pavement that turns into confidence the moment the surface breaks up. The clearance is genuine, so you stop flinching at ruts and rock steps within the first mile. This bike is happiest on its pegs, and it lets you know.

The Truth on the Trail

Known issues

  • Front tank fuel line abrasion (recall)

    fuel system rare Recall

Fuel lines on the front tank can chafe against the tank, risking a fuel leak. Husqvarna issued recall HTB2105 (NHTSA 21V-363) for 2020 models to replace the lines and add a securing clamp.

  • Clutch slave cylinder failure

    drivetrain common

The stock clutch slave cylinder is known to leak fluid or completely fail, leading to sudden loss of clutch disengagement. Installing an aftermarket replacement is a common preventative upgrade.

  • Electrical gremlins (battery drain, intermittent dash flickering, occasional cut-outs)

    electrics occasional

Owners report weak batteries leading to starting problems, intermittent display flickering, and occasional engine cut-outs, often resolved by switching to a lithium battery. Poor battery performance is a commonly cited frustration.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 701 Enduro LR is actually built for.

Factory Butte in Utah's high desert badlands, captured in daylight under clear blue sky. The formation's distinctive multi-colored strata and steep erosional gullies dominate the frame. Arid terrain with minimal vegetation stretches across the foreground and background. Typical American Southwest landscape.

Best motorcycle for Moab?

This is your bike. Long travel, honest clearance and enough fuel to link the hard lines around Moab into a multi-day loop without building the whole day around a gas station.

Made for Bar M / Kane Creek · Imperial Sand Dunes · Johnson Valley OHV Area

Best motocross bike for Loretta Lynns?

Straight answer: this is not your race bike. It will happily turn laps on a practice track, but the long-range tank and street equipment make it a trail machine, not a starting-gate tool.

Best motorcycle for BDR routes?

The range solves your logistics and the chassis handles the ugly sections. Accept the tall seat and plan your own luggage, and it turns a BDR into a riding problem instead of a fuel problem.
