The Enduro Sweet Spot

The Machine's Character

The FE 350 lives in the sweet spot of the enduro class, and that is the entire point of it. The 350 cc liquid-cooled single makes 45 hp and 22 lb-ft, figures that read modest on paper and feel like exactly the right amount once the trail turns technical. Power builds in a clean line instead of a hit, so grip stays available. The steel double cradle frame keeps the mass low and central, the WP suspension is adjustable at both ends, and traction control and ride modes come standard. None of it is decoration.

It carries the agility of a smaller machine with enough torque to pull up a rocky step without theatrics, and it stays settled when the trail opens out. Parts support is deep and the platform tolerates abuse, so keeping one for several hard seasons is realistic rather than hopeful. This is a bike for riders who actually ride technical dirt, not for people who want the look. The caveats are real ones: the 37.4 in (950 mm) seat is tall, the 2.4 gal (9 L) tank keeps days short, and there is no ABS, so road links are all on you.

The Voice of Experience

Portrait of NastyNils

The test ride

The first thing your legs report is how narrow it is. Get aboard, which takes a genuine swing of the leg, and you are tiptoeing at a stop unless you are tall, but the bike shrinks the moment it rolls. Stand up and the bar-to-peg relationship falls exactly where your body wants it, so moving between seated and standing costs you nothing all day. The single has a hard, mechanical bark to it at real trail pace, and almost none of that reaches your hands. Vibration never builds into the dull buzz that turns a long ride into a countdown. Over rocks and roots you notice how little the bike shouts at you, which leaves your attention on the line ahead. It feels light exactly where light matters, at walking pace and in the air.

The Truth on the Trail

Known issues

  • Plastic oil pump gear susceptible to failure in extreme conditions

    engine occasional

Some owners report that the plastic oil pump gear can fail under prolonged high-temperature or extreme low-speed, high-load conditions, potentially causing oil starvation and engine damage. Upgrading to an aftermarket metal gear is a common preventative measure.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the FE 350 is actually built for.

Factory Butte in Utah's high desert badlands, captured in daylight under clear blue sky. The formation's distinctive multi-colored strata and steep erosional gullies dominate the frame. Arid terrain with minimal vegetation stretches across the foreground and background. Typical American Southwest landscape.

Best motorcycle for Moab?

This is the right tool for slickrock, sand, and lines that punish hesitation. Plan your fuel stops around the 2.4 gal (9 L) tank, because range ends your day long before the bike does.

Made for Bar M / Kane Creek · Imperial Sand Dunes · Johnson Valley OHV Area

Best motocross bike for Loretta Lynns?

It holds its own on a motocross track and makes a serious training bike, but the six-speed and the tractable power delivery are tuned for enduro traction, not pure gate-to-gate sprinting.

Made for Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area · Fox Raceway at Pala · Glen Helen Raceway

Best motorcycle for BDR routes?

For multi-day route logistics this is the wrong bike: no luggage system and only 2.4 gal (9 L) of fuel. Bring it for the hardest sections of a route, not the miles in between.

Made for AZBDR — Arizona Backcountry Discovery Route · California BDR South · COBDR — Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route

Alternatives to the Husqvarna FE 350

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Husqvarna FE 350. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
