F4 1000 R312 (MY2009)

Italian Fire Above Eight Thousand

The Machine's Character

The R312 is the sharpest version of the F4 1000 from Varese, and the engine is why. MV fitted this inline-four with larger titanium valves, hotter cams, bigger throttle bodies and shorter intake trumpets than the standard F4 1000 R. It makes 183 hp and 83 lb-ft. Below 8,000 rpm it pulls cleanly and has real torque. Above that the rush turns fierce, with an urgency that feels almost like a two-stroke. It all sits in Massimo Tamburini's steel trellis frame, a design you fall for before you ever turn the key.

On the road it rides like what it is: a hard-edged superbike with no electronic safety net. There's no ABS, no traction control and no ride modes, so the throttle and the brakes are entirely your business. The adjustable suspension comes set firm, and the bike asks for real commitment on broken pavement. Flat out it's rock solid, and lean clearance is vast. Ownership takes a dedicated hand. The rear hub bearing is a known weak point, the light radiator can crack, and it runs hot in slow traffic. This bike is for an experienced rider who buys on emotion and accepts the Italian quirks.

A winding two-lane asphalt road in the Appalachian mountains, photographed in dry daylight. Yellow double-center line markings guide through a series of tight left-hand curves. Dense deciduous and evergreen forest flanks both sides; a rock cut is visible on the right. The road surface and geometry suggest a technical, high-traffic riding corridor popular with motorcyclists.

Known issues

  • Rear wheel hub bearing failure

    drivetrain rare

The rear hub bearing is weak and can fail, exacerbated by tight chain tension or pressure washing.

  • Overheating in slow-moving traffic

    cooling occasional

The engine runs very hot and can overheat if not given constant airflow; aftermarket fans or ECU reflash to turn fans on earlier are common fixes.

  • Radiator cracking at top left gallery

    cooling occasional

The radiator assembly is light and prone to cracking at the top left, leading to coolant leaks.

  • Engine hunting on cold starts

    engine occasional

The engine may hunt and idle unevenly when cold, a characteristic of the fueling setup.
