Differences between the standard 1098 and the R
Race Homologation, Road Legal
The 1098 R exists because Ducati needed a road bike to make its World Superbike effort legal, and the whole machine is shaped by that. The 1198 cc Testastretta Evoluzione L-twin puts 180 hp and 99 lb-ft under a chassis that weighs 414 lb wet, and the suspension, brakes and bodywork are chosen for lap time rather than showroom appeal. Traction control comes as standard here, layered onto a bike that is otherwise deliberately analog. There are no ride modes, no ABS, no quickshifter. Lean clearance is effectively unlimited, and the design still stops people in parking lots.
Ownership is where the honesty is required. This is a hard, focused motorcycle with a 32.3 in seat, a committed riding position and a 56.3 in wheelbase built for turning, not for cruising. Fully adjustable suspension front and rear plus a steering damper mean you can dial it in properly, and the aftermarket support is deep. The known issues matter: early bikes stalled at idle until the ECU was addressed, the plastic tank can swell on ethanol fuel, and the clutch slave cylinder and fuel pump relay are wear points. Buy one for track days and canyon Sundays, not commuting.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

None of this came out of a questionnaire. It built up over years of standing around in the pits between sessions, owners talking his ear off at club nights, and the steady mail and messages from people who actually ride these things. Set the engine talk aside and the community lands on two clear patterns for the 1098. Riders think very highly of the hardware bolted to it, and they are blunt about how short its comfortable range is.
Once the conversation moves past the motor, it goes to the chassis. Riders describe a bike that stays composed and stable through a corner, and the ones who run them on track are the most emphatic about it. The stiff steel trellis frame and the quality of the suspension come up constantly. The Öhlins rear shock and the fully adjustable front end get talked about as genuine race hardware rather than a line on a spec sheet. A smaller group extends that to the rest of the build. Carbon-fiber bodywork, forged wheels and high-spec components add up to a light, expensive feel that owners say they notice every time they use the bike, and it is a big part of why they hold onto them.
The complaint that comes back most often in this part of the conversation has nothing to do with pace or parts. Riders describe clip-ons set low and rearsets set high, and they say plainly that long days on the bike hurt. Owners who tried running one as a regular ride report the same limit, and stop-and-go traffic gets raised about as often as highway miles do. It is the point where enthusiasm for the machine and its usefulness on an ordinary week stop lining up.
Voltage regulator failure (recall)
Engine heat damages the voltage regulator, leading to battery discharge and sudden engine stalling. A recall (NHTSA 08V-638) replaced the unit and added a heat shield.
Stalling when coming to a stop
Early models (2007 build) often stalled when pulling the clutch at idle. Fixed via ECU reflash or replacement under warranty; most 2008+ bikes are unaffected.
Plastic fuel tank swelling
Ethanol-blended fuels cause the nylon tank to absorb moisture and expand, potentially cracking or misaligning mounting points. Aftermarket Caswell liners or replacement tanks are common fixes.
Clutch slave cylinder leak
The clutch slave cylinder can develop a fluid leak, causing a spongy feel and eventual clutch disengagement issues. Replacement with an aftermarket upgrade is common.
Fuel pump relay premature failure
The fuel pump relay is a known weak point, and preventive replacement during major service is recommended.
Engine stalling when returning to idle
Many early 1098s suffered from stalling when the throttle was closed, especially at stoplights. The issue could often be resolved by replacing the ECU under warranty.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 1098 is actually built for.
On Angeles Crest this bike is in its element: light, sharp, and endlessly leanable. Just accept that the ride up through LA traffic is the price you pay for the next two hours.

This is what the R was built for. Adjustable suspension, traction control and huge lean clearance reward setup work, but you get no ABS safety net, so bring skill.

The feedback and precision suit the Dragon perfectly. The riding position and short fuel range make the drive out from Atlanta or Knoxville the harder part of the weekend.
