Ninja 500 (MY2024)

3.5 / 5 NastyNils Rating · against its class

Light, Nimble, Surprisingly Capable

The Machine's Character

The Ninja 500 is built around a 451 cc liquid-cooled parallel twin making 52 hp at 10,000 rpm and 32 lb-ft at 7,500 rpm, wrapped in a full fairing and a chassis that comes in at 379 lb (172 kg) wet. That puts it at the accessible end of the sportbike class, where the argument is not a headline power figure but how much of the bike you can genuinely use on a public road. ABS is standard, and so are a slipper clutch, LED lighting and smartphone connectivity. A TFT dash is available rather than fitted across the board.

It rides the way those numbers suggest. Light, willing to change direction, and settled enough at speed that the fairing earns its place on a long back-road day. Peak power sits high, so the twin wants revs when you lean on it, and the six-speed gets used properly. Ownership is where it makes its strongest case: running costs stay low, the mechanicals have a solid record, and aftermarket support is unusually deep for the money. The honest caveat is electronic. ABS is the whole rider-aid story here, and the fork carries no adjustment at all, only rear preload.

A winding two-lane asphalt road in the Appalachian mountains, photographed in dry daylight. Yellow double-center line markings guide through a series of tight left-hand curves. Dense deciduous and evergreen forest flanks both sides; a rock cut is visible on the right. The road surface and geometry suggest a technical, high-traffic riding corridor popular with motorcyclists.

Known issues

  • Clutch release shaft weld failure (Safety Recall)

    drivetrain rare Recall

On units built between January 22 and February 6, 2024, an improperly welded clutch release shaft may cause the lever to separate, making clutch disengagement impossible. This recall (NHTSA 25V146 / Kawasaki MC25-04) affected 3,742 motorcycles and requires shaft replacement.

  • Intermittent starting problems

    electrics rare

One owner reported occasional failure to start, requiring a short wait before the engine catches. Cause unknown; not widely reported.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Ninja 500 is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best motorcycle for Angeles Crest?

Angeles Crest rewards a bike you can place exactly where you want, and this one does that all day. You are riding on ABS alone, though, with no traction control behind a bad throttle call.

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

If you are chasing clean lines on the Dragon and Cherohala rather than top speed, the light steering and lean clearance here are the right tools. Cheap to run, too, when you repeat those roads weekly.

Made for Back of the Dragon · Blue Ridge Parkway · Cherohala Skyway

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

Good for Hill Country loops and the highway miles out to them, helped by the fairing and a 3.7 gal (14 L) tank. There is no cruise control, so plan the interstate legs in shorter stretches.
