Italian Feedback, Zero Forgiveness

The Machine's Character

The 749 is Ducati's middleweight superbike shrunk down to a scalpel. The 748 cc Testastretta V-twin makes 108 hp at 10,000 rpm and 59 lb-ft, and it works the way a sharp small-bore twin should: real drive from the middle, then a hard run to the top that pays you for holding a gear. Around it sits a steel trellis frame, fully adjustable Showa suspension and a steering damper as standard equipment. The vertical headlights and single-scoop fairing give it a face you either love or argue about. This is a supersport built around chassis feel first.

It rewards riders who commit. Ride it lazily and it feels like hard work for no reward. Ride it properly, revs up and weight forward, and it makes sense immediately. There is no traction control, no ABS, no ride modes: everything happens between your right wrist and the tire, and that is exactly why experienced riders still hunt these down. Two decades on, the chassis, the finish and the parts supply have aged better than the wiring has. Buy on condition and service history, budget for electrical fettling, and accept 25 mpg. If you want a bike that covers your mistakes, this is not it.

A winding two-lane asphalt road in the Appalachian mountains, photographed in dry daylight. Yellow double-center line markings guide through a series of tight left-hand curves. Dense deciduous and evergreen forest flanks both sides; a rock cut is visible on the right. The road surface and geometry suggest a technical, high-traffic riding corridor popular with motorcyclists.

The Truth on the Street

Twenty years of rider talk sits behind this section: conversations in the pits, at bike meets, and in the messages owners send me without being asked. On the 749 the sentiment splits cleanly along one line. The riding earns affection, the ownership earns caveats.

What Keeps Owners Loyal

The desmo V-twin leads every conversation. Owners describe it as charismatic, flexible in the middle and eager at the top, the kind of motor that talks them into a longer route home. Handling comes up almost as often: riders single out the road feel through the chassis and the confidence it gives them mid-corner. Styling is the third thread, and it is usually why the bike ended up in their garage rather than something Japanese.

Where The Shine Wears Off

Electrical trouble dominates the complaints. Riders report relay failures and corrosion in the harness that turn into intermittent faults with no obvious pattern. Running costs draw the next round of grumbling, since the service intervals come around quickly and the work is not cheap next to Japanese rivals. A smaller group brings up the riding position, saying an hour in the saddle is about all their wrists and backside will take.

Known issues

  • Fuel starvation from rusty fuel tank

    fuel system occasional

Internal tank rust can flake off and clog the fuel filter, causing stalling and hesitation, especially at low fuel levels. Known issue on some 2005 models, often requiring tank and pump replacement.

  • Regulator/rectifier failure

    electrics occasional

The voltage regulator/rectifier may fail, leading to charging system problems and potential battery drain.

  • Electrical relay and wiring harness corrosion

    electrics occasional

The fuel pump and headlight relays are prone to failure, and the wiring harness behind the battery is susceptible to corrosion, leading to intermittent electrical faults and starting issues.

  • Sidestand shearing

    chassis rare

The aluminum sidestand can crack or shear off, especially if the bike is leaned heavily or knocked over.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 749 is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.
