New Engine, Raw Orange Attack
The 450 EXC runs KTM's XC4 single, a 449 cc liquid-cooled four-stroke that makes 52 hp and 35 lb-ft and spins up with the urgency you expect from Orange. The chassis comes straight from KTM's motocross thinking, wrapped around fully adjustable WP suspension with 11.8 in (300 mm) of travel up front and 13.2 in (335 mm) at the rear. Six gears, a chain, street homologation for linking trails, and almost nothing in the way of electronics. This is a focused hard-enduro tool that posts a perfect 10 for off-road ability and track capability, and it wears that intent honestly.
On the trail it rewards a rider who reads terrain and stays busy, and it asks for that effort back. The 38.2 in (970 mm) seat is tall, the 2.5 gal (9.5 L) tank keeps your range short, and this first year of the new engine carries real teething issues you need to know about before you buy. Stay on top of maintenance and it ages into a tough, endlessly tunable machine that scores a 9 out of 10 for aftermarket support. Ride one lazy and it will punish you. Plastic oil pump gear failure
Some owners report the plastic oil pump gear can disintegrate, leading to oil pressure loss and potential engine damage. Upgrading to an aluminum aftermarket gear is a common preventative fix.
Engine oil migration to transmission
On early 2008 models, engine oil could migrate into the transmission cavity due to a faulty seal, causing transmission overfill and potential engine starvation. Affected bikes may require updated seals or complete engine inspection.
Premature cam and ring wear
Some owners reported defective compression release mechanism on the camshaft and early ring wear, leading to reduced compression and power loss.
