KTM built the 2005 450 EXC as a race bike first and sorted out the rest afterward. The 448 cc liquid-cooled single makes 55 hp and 31 lb-ft, but the number that matters least here is peak power. What counts is how it arrives: metered out, hunting for grip instead of spinning it away. Around the engine sits a chrome-moly steel double cradle, adjustable WP suspension at both ends, and 15.0 in (380 mm) of ground clearance. The six-speed box spreads wide, with a first gear low enough to crawl technical steps and a sixth tall enough to cover open desert.
Two decades on, condition is everything. A well-kept example still feels tight and honest. A neglected one hides its bills in the top end and the seals, and it will not warn you first. This is a bike for a rider who already has skills to spend and wants technical terrain rather than comfort. The honest caveat is how much it asks back. Seat height is 36.4 in (925 mm), the tank holds 2.1 gal (8 L), and there is nothing electronic between your right wrist and the rear tire. Maintenance here isn't optional, it's the price of entry.

Riders describe the 450 EXC as one connected package rather than a collection of good parts. Strong but tractable drive, light weight, and steering sharp enough to put the front wheel exactly where they want it. The engine draws the same steady approval: grunt down low that keeps building instead of stepping in, so power goes down over changing ground without drama. The gearbox spread and the WP units get their own mentions, holding composure over roots and rock.
On early engines, owners report intake valves losing clearance, with stainless replacements bringing starting and compression back. Oil showing up where it shouldn't is the other regular theme, most often at the countershaft seal, less often at the water pump shaft. Lighter riders raise a separate point: the stock suspension settings feel firm early in the travel, and they end up on softer springs or a re-valve.
Premature intake valve wear
The factory plain steel intake valves can tulip over time, causing loss of valve clearance and compression. Symptoms include difficult starting and performance loss. The fix is to install stainless steel intake valves.
Electrical starting difficulties
Some riders experience difficulty starting the engine, often traced to a weak battery, faulty starter relay, or corroded wiring connections.
Countershaft seal oil leak
The seal behind the front sprocket can weep oil, particularly as mileage accumulates. A replacement seal and ensuring the collar is not grooved typically resolves it.
Water pump shaft seal seepage
The water pump shaft seals (oil and coolant) may seep, causing a small external drip. A seal rebuild kit and careful assembly can fix the leak.
Engine stalling / clogged fuel filter
A clogged fuel filter or debris in the carburetor can cause intermittent stalling or poor throttle response. Regular cleaning and filter replacement prevent the issue.
