250 EXC-F (MY2008)

Light, Planted, Woods-Ready

The Machine's Character

The 250 EXC-F is built around KTM's four-stroke single: 249 cc, liquid-cooled, 42 hp, hung in a light steel frame. This is not a motocross engine wearing a headlight. The tuning is aimed at drive rather than at a peak number, so it pulls cleanly from low revs and keeps the rear tire working on loose ground, with a 6-speed box that gives you room to gear it for trees or for open desert. Travel is serious at 11.8 in (300 mm) front and 13.2 in (335 mm) rear, and the shock is adjustable from the factory. A proper enduro tool, orange and unapologetic about it.

It rewards a rider who reads terrain instead of one who twists harder. 42 hp in a bike this slim is plenty, and the value sits in how cleanly that power arrives. It ages the way hard-used KTM enduros do: chassis and running gear absorb abuse, service access is straightforward, and the aftermarket lets you build it into whatever your local terrain demands. The caveats are honest ones. The carburetor wants regular attention to stay crisp, the 2.1 gal (8 L) tank keeps your loops short, and at 37.8 in (960 mm) the seat is a real reach for shorter riders.
