Yamaha XSR900 (RN80) vs MT-09 (RN87)
Yamaha XSR900 vs MT-09: where they split, and which one to buy.
Tip the Yamaha XSR900 into a run of bends and its chassis doesn't hold back as the road keeps tightening. The Yamaha MT-09's front drops in before you've asked.
So which one do you buy?
Buy the XSR900 if…
Keeping running costs low
Clearly ahead: XSR900

The MT-09 has the edge if…
Daily commuting & city riding
Narrow edge: MT-09
Your daily ride leans slightly toward the MT-09. Fit and price can easily outweigh that.
What makes each one tick
XSR900
On its long wheelbase, the XSR900 settles in and stays put once the road opens up. At sustained high speed with a full head of wind pushing on the chest, it tracks straight. Out of the hairpins on the Twisted Sisters, the triple pulls hard in whatever gear you're holding. Corner entry isn't a flick. The fork keeps feeding back all the way to the apex.
Nils rode the XSR900 in Austria and Montenegro in 2024 (1000PS test reports).
MT-09
Left in a tall gear through the bends, the MT-09 still hooks up and drives off the corner. For a naked bike, this matters: the motor pulls strongly from low in the range. Lazy shifts don't cost you. There's no hunting at the throttle mid-corner, and the triple hands out just the torque your wrist calls for. The peg feelers scrape before the clearance runs out.

Both miss here
As first bikes, both are a stretch. Starting smaller isn't a step down.
There's no real gap on twisty roads. Sit on both and let fit and price decide.

Known problems to check before you buy
XSR900
- Premature rear tire wear Owners frequently report the original-equipment Bridgestone rear tire wearing out well before the mileage they expect, the soft factory sport compound squaring off and reaching the wear bars early under normal road use; a running-cost annoyance rather than a mechanical failure.
- Stalling and rough idle linked to ECU mapping Some early MY2022 and MY2023 bikes exhibit stalling at low rpm during clutch-out from stops and rough idle when warm; addressed by dealer ECU reflash under Yamaha service campaigns in several markets.
- Heat from exhaust header onto right leg Pre-cat header routing transmits noticeable heat to the rider's right thigh in slow traffic and at standstill, especially in warm weather.
- Side-stand switch fault preventing start Reports of intermittent side-stand interlock switch failures causing no-start conditions; usually resolved by switch replacement under warranty.
MT-09
No confirmed faults on file yet. That's not the same as fault-free.
