Yamaha MT-09 (RN69) Buyer's Guide

The Machine's Character

The MT-09 is built around Yamaha's 890cc CP3 inline-three, and that engine sets the whole tone. It makes 119 hp and 69 lb-ft, with peak torque landing at 7,000 rpm, so the meat of the drive sits right where you use it on the road. Yamaha calls this the middleweight Hyper Naked flagship, slotting it between the MT-07 twin and the MT-10 four. A CF die-cast aluminum frame, SpinForged 17-inch wheels, and a 417 lb wet weight keep it light and quick to steer, while ABS, Cornering ABS, traction control, and ride modes come standard.

On the road it reads as friendly rather than intimidating, and that is its real trick: a lot of character without a lot of drama. Reliability scores high and the aftermarket is deep, so this is a bike you can keep, modify, and live with for years. Who it's for: riders who want close to literbike thrills at middleweight weight and price. The honest caveat is the recall history around engine stalling and throttle-sensor wear, plus a 32.5 in seat that taller riders love and shorter ones should sit on before buying.

The Truth on the Street

Over the years I've listened to MT-09 owners in the paddock, at club nights, over coffee after a ride, and in the messages riders send me directly. For this RN69 generation the pattern is consistent. Owners praise the chassis, the electronics and what they got for the money. Most of their complaints concern comfort and finish rather than anything that stops the bike.

Planted chassis, plenty for the money

Riders who knew the previous RN43 give this chassis a lot of credit. They describe it as planted when the pace rises and say it finally earns the sport-naked reputation the old bike never quite got. The electronics come up nearly as often. Owners point to the IMU-based rider aids, including slide and lift control, as a big reason the bike felt like strong value at launch, when the standard model started at $9,399 and undercut comparable rivals. Several long-term owners report more than 19,000 miles without trouble.

Where the heat and buzz reach you

Most complaints are about comfort. From around 6,000 rpm the mirrors blur, and because pulling the clutch stops it, owners trace it to the engine. The fixes they usually mention are retorquing the mirror stem nut or fitting bar-end mirrors. In summer stop-and-go traffic the coolant reaches about 221°F (105°C) and the fan blows warm air across your legs. That is within Yamaha's spec, but owners still don't like it. The stock seat is called firm and slippery, and it lets you slide forward under braking and acceleration. Passengers get a small, thin pad, high pegs and nothing useful to hold, so two-up trips stay short.

The smaller gripes owners keep raising

Owners also raise a few smaller gripes. Mode 4, the most conservative setting, caps output so much that riders only see a use for it in the rain. Under hard front braking the ABS is said to step in early and firmly. The finish draws comments too: surface corrosion on header studs and engine-case fasteners within the first season, a visible wiring loom near the headstock, indicators that pop loose and a plasticky TFT surround. Riders call these cosmetic, with no structural worries. The fuel gauge bars also drop in steps rather than smoothly.

Known issues

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) wear causing unstable idle/stalling (recall 25V-248)

electrics common Recall

Worn TPS due to excessive brush sliding from improper ECU programming leads to unstable idling, throttle hesitation, and stalling. Yamaha recall (NHTSA 25V-248) requires TPS replacement and ECU reflash for affected units.
Engine stalling due to ECU programming (recall 22V-130)

electrics very common Recall

Improper ECU programming can cause engine to stall unexpectedly, particularly when clutch lever not pulled fully or at small throttle openings from idle. Affects all 2021-2022 MT-09 models; Yamaha recall issued March 2022 for ECU reflash.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Yamaha MT-09. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
