Panigale V4 R (MY2023)

The Race Homologation Barely Street-Legal

The Machine's Character

This is the version that exists so Ducati can go racing in World Superbike, and everything about it follows from that. The 998 cc Desmosedici Stradale R V4 makes 218 hp at 15,500 rpm and 82 lb-ft, backed by a dry clutch, an Öhlins NPX fork, an Öhlins TTX36 shock and forged aluminum wheels. The bodywork carries aero shaped by the race program. At 425 lb wet and 205 mph, it sits at the very sharp end of the supersport class, and the rider aids (cornering ABS, traction control, Ducati Slide Control, Ducati Wheelie Control, Ducati Power Launch, DQS Up/Down) are there to make that potential usable rather than to police you.

Ridden the way it was built to be ridden, all of it makes sense. Ownership is the honest part of the conversation. The 33.5 in seat, the racer's reach to the bars and the heat coming off a V4 packed into tight bodywork make it a poor daily bike. There is no cruise control and no tire pressure monitoring, and the 4.5 gal tank sets the schedule. It suits the rider with track days on the calendar and a budget for tires and fluids. Buy it as a race homologation bike you can register and it delivers. Buy it as a street bike and it will wear you out.

The Voice of Experience

The test ride

Thumb the starter and the V4 announces itself before you have moved an inch. Idle carries that dry clutch clatter, and the note hardens into something close to operatic as the revs climb. It is the best sounding machine I have ridden in this class, and that alone changes how a ride feels. The riding position is pure race: high pegs, low bars, and a lot of your weight going through your wrists at anything under real pace. On the road you feel engine heat through your legs the moment traffic slows down, and the fully adjustable Öhlins fork and shock ride firm over broken pavement because they were set up for smooth asphalt. The payoff is clarity. The front tire keeps talking to you, and the bike happily carries lean angles the road will never ask for.

A winding two-lane asphalt road in the Appalachian mountains, photographed in dry daylight. Yellow double-center line markings guide through a series of tight left-hand curves. Dense deciduous and evergreen forest flanks both sides; a rock cut is visible on the right. The road surface and geometry suggest a technical, high-traffic riding corridor popular with motorcyclists.

The Truth on the Street

Known issues

  • Rear wheel shaft failure (Safety Recall 25V570)

    chassis rare Recall

Ducati recalled certain 2019-2024 Panigale V4 R models due to a potential rear wheel shaft defect that could lead to failure, increasing crash risk. The remedy is a free rear wheel axle replacement.

The Handshake Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Panigale V4 R is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best motorcycle for Laguna Seca?

This is the bike you were already picturing. The aero, the Öhlins and the rider aids all exist to make lap after lap repeatable, so you can work on your riding instead of fighting the machine.

Made for Barber Motorsports Park · WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca · Circuit of the Americas

Best motorcycle for Angeles Crest?

Angeles Crest will never use half of what this bike has, but it is glorious up there on a clear morning. Accept that the ride out through LA traffic is the price of admission.

Made for Angeles Crest Highway · Coronado Trail / US 191 · Highway 1 / Big Sur

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

The Dragon and the Cherohala are slower and tighter than this bike's natural pace, so you will ride well inside it. Still rewarding, but plan for the wrist load over a long day of repeats.

Made for Back of the Dragon · Blue Ridge Parkway · Cherohala Skyway

Alternatives to the Ducati Panigale V4 R

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Ducati Panigale V4 R. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
