The Boxer That Got Serious

The Machine's Character

The R 1300 RS is BMW's boxer sport-tourer with its sleeves rolled up. The 1300 cc flat-twin makes 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 110 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm. It sits in a steel main frame with a die-cast aluminum subframe, which keeps the mass tight and central. Up front is a 1.85 in (47 mm) upside-down fork, out back the EVO Paralever with shaft drive, and semi-active Dynamic ESA comes standard. Cornering ABS, traction control, ride modes, cruise control, keyless and a TFT are all included. The result is a sport-tourer that leans further toward sport than most in its class.

On the road it's neutral and settled. It stays calm at highway speed and is happy to add lean angle when the pavement starts to wind. Neither end has manual clickers, so the semi-active suspension does the adjusting for you. At 536 lb (243 kg) wet it's no featherweight, but the mass is well centralized, and with shaft drive the routine maintenance stays straightforward. It suits the experienced rider who wants 300-mile days with real bite in the corners. The caveat is that the windscreen is fixed, and heated grips, luggage and a center stand all cost extra.

The Long-Haul Verdict

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the R 1300 RS is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best motorcycle for Highway 1?

This is your bike. It holds 300-mile days on Highway 1 or the Blue Ridge without fuss, and it still carves properly when the road tightens. Just budget for luggage and heated grips.

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

The sharp chassis, generous lean clearance and precise throttle suit repeated runs through the Appalachian twisties well. It's heavier than a pure sportbike, but it's far easier to live with on the ride there.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

It will cross the country in stable, composed style. For two-up trips over Beartooth with full bags, though, the fixed screen, 4.5 gal (17 L) tank and optional luggage mean compromises.
