Triple Engine, Friendly Confidence

The Machine's Character

Triumph slots the Trident 800 between the Trident 660 and the Street Triple 765, and the 798 cc inline-three is what defines it. You get 113 hp at 10,750 rpm and 62 lb-ft at 8,500 rpm, spread as a broad rising pull rather than one narrow hit near the top. A steel tube frame, suspension adjustable at both ends, and 437 lb wet keep it honest on real roads. The kit list is generous for a middleweight naked: cornering ABS, traction control, ride modes, cruise control, an up and down quickshifter, and a TFT with navigation and phone connectivity.

On the road it feels lighter than the numbers suggest, and it stays friendly in traffic on the way to the good stuff. There is enough lean clearance that you run out of nerve before the bike runs out of angle, and reliability is the kind you stop thinking about after the first season. The aftermarket is deep if you want to make it your own. This one suits riders who want genuine sporting ability without a bike that punishes them on ordinary days. The caveat: the 31.9 in (810 mm) seat is a stretch for shorter legs, and the 3.8 gal (14.3 L) tank breaks long days into shorter stints.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Trident 800 is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

If you run the same tight corners week after week to sharpen technique, this is a good tool. It is light, honest, and forgiving enough that you work on your lines instead of managing the bike.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?

City traffic Monday, ridge roads Saturday. Cruise control, a TFT with navigation and phone connectivity, and easy handling cover both jobs without asking you to own two bikes.

Best motorcycle for Angeles Crest?

You will use every bit of the 113 hp and all of the lean clearance on a canyon run. It rewards precision more than brute force, so bring technique and it stays entertaining all day.

Alternatives to the Triumph Trident 800

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Triumph Trident 800. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
