Confidence Built Into Every Pound
The Z650 keeps its recipe simple and gets it right. A 649 cc parallel twin makes 68 hp and 47 lb-ft, hung in a compact trellis frame that holds the whole bike to 412 lb wet. That low mass is the headline. It gives the Z650 genuinely light, obedient steering, the sort that lets you set a line and trim it without wrestling the bars. Traction control is standard, the seat sits at a friendly 31.1 inches, and nothing about the ergonomics asks for prior experience. This is a middleweight naked built to flatter rather than intimidate, and it lands right in the honest center of its class.
On the road that character holds up. The twin pulls with a rising, torque-led shove that suits back roads and city work far better than a peaky number would, and the chassis stays composed at the pace most riders actually use. It ages well too. Reliability and running costs are among its strongest traits, and the aftermarket is deep enough to make the bike your own. The honest caveat is that 68 hp is a friendly figure, not an explosive one, and the front fork is non-adjustable, so heavier or hard-charging riders will find its comfort zone sooner. For everyone else, that ceiling sits well past daily needs.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

Sort through years of rider feedback on the Z650, from conversations in owner circles to pit-lane talk and the messages riders send me after a full season, and a consistent read emerges. People warm to this one fast, and the doubts they raise stay few and pointed.
The praise clusters around how little the Z650 asks of its rider. They point first to the nimble, low-mass chassis, which flicks through city traffic and holds a line on back roads, steadying newer hands in a hurry. Close behind sits the parallel twin, called smooth and linear, with torque laid down broadly enough that daily riding never feels short-changed. Shorter riders keep raising the low seat and how readily they plant both feet, and a few note the color TFT for its readable, uncluttered screen.
The reservations are fewer and more specific. A recurring one is that the engine trades top-end thrill for low-rpm shove, so anyone hunting a hard rush near the redline comes away wanting. The other regular mention is the suspension, light on adjustment and prone to feeling under-controlled once the road turns choppy or the pace picks up.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Kawasaki Z650. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
