So which one do you buy?

The Tuono V4 1100 has the edge if…

Racetrack use

Inches ahead: Tuono V4 1100

For track days, the Tuono V4 1100 comes out a touch ahead. The reason: more suspension adjustment. Your setup and tires matter just as much.

The Speed Triple 1200 RS has the edge if…

Daily commuting & city riding

Nose ahead: Speed Triple 1200 RS

For the Monday-to-Friday grind, the Speed Triple 1200 RS pulls a nose in front. The difference is simpler maintenance. Your own commute could easily flip it.

Character, looks and sound

Narrow edge: Speed Triple 1200 RS

The Speed Triple 1200 RS has a bit more presence and character. What tips it: a purer look and more retro style. This one still comes down to taste.

Which one's the smarter buy

No clear advantage

The lower sticker price doesn't settle which one is the better buy. Neither bike is the clear better value for the money.

What makes each one tick

Tuono V4 1100

The Tuono V4 1100 answers the gas instantly in Race mode, yet the grip doesn't go digital and you can still feed torque in by degrees. Corner entry doesn't take any coaxing: the nose turns in at once and the front tire feeds plenty back. There's room to shift around the saddle for that entry too, because the tank runs narrow. The V4 howls to the limiter.

Speed Triple 1200 RS

From the first corner, the Speed Triple 1200 RS carries its mass down low in a compact package. Very tall and heavier riders may feel squeezed. The factory setup handles road riding and track sessions without needing adjustment between the two. A bump won't get much sympathy from the track-tuned Ohlins suspension, which trades away road comfort. The triple's top end turns explosive, and the brakes don't wake up until a few hard stops have warmed them. Warm pads scrub speed off savagely.

Which one for the way you ride

Comfortable long-distance riding

Wrong job for both

Hours in the saddle won't flatter either of these. They're happier on shorter runs.

On twisty roads, these two are a wash. That's where your budget and your inseam get the final say.

Known problems to check before you buy

Tuono V4 1100

  • High coolant temperatures and overheating tendency at low speeds The Euro 5 Tuono runs very hot in slow city traffic and when idling at traffic lights, because the radiator and fan cannot shed enough heat without steady airflow. Coolant temperature climbs into the warning range and stays high until the bike is moving at a sustained pace again. Owners report having to switch the engine off during long stops to keep temperatures under control.
  • Dog wear in 3rd and 4th gear with intensive quickshifter use With frequent quickshifter use under full throttle and high rpm, the dogs in 3rd and 4th gear wear faster than normal. False neutrals then occur between 3rd/4th and 4th/5th gear. Aprilia has hardened replacement parts available for 3rd and 4th gear. The problem has been documented since the V4 platform and is also confirmed for Euro 5.
  • Valve guide failure requiring cylinder head replacement An exhaust valve guide in the rear cylinder can work loose or detach, resulting in substantial loss of cylinder compression during leak-down testing and severe engine power loss resembling an electronic limp mode.
  • Noticeable power deficit and uneven throttle response in the lower rpm range The Euro 5 mapping causes a measurable power gap below 5,500 rpm. Throttle response at 4,000-5,500 rpm feels uneven/pulsating. When transitioning from 5-15% throttle to closed throttle, the engine can react jerkily. An Aprilia Race Map or Rapid Bike tuning kit largely resolves the problem.
  • Soft paintwork, scratch-prone surfaces, corroding fasteners The paintwork is described as extremely scratch-prone — without adequate clear coat. Graphics/decals in some areas have no clear coat and are quickly damaged by stone chips. Fasteners and washers (particularly mudguard mountings) are not stainless and show early corrosion. Body panels do not fit precisely and have visible panel gaps.

Speed Triple 1200 RS

  • Sudden engine stall during riding without warning Engine stalls suddenly and without warning during riding. No sputtering, no warning lights beforehand. After restart (ignition off/on) everything works again. Possible causes: (1) accidental activation of kill switch (located close to the handlebar grip), (2) exhaust valve problem, (3) electronics fault. Individual cases resolved under warranty (exhaust valve replacement).
  • Quickshifter fails at warm temperatures The quickshifter works normally with a cold engine but becomes less reliable as engine and ambient temperatures rise. In hot weather it can stop working entirely on some units, so the rider has to fall back on the clutch for every shift. A transmission fault warning may appear on the display. When hot, the quickshifter sensor stops reporting shift-load values correctly. On some units the fault keeps coming back, even after the sensor has been replaced under warranty.
  • Exhaust valve servo/actuator causes fault codes P0475 and limp mode The pressure-sensitive cable between the servo motor and butterfly valve of the exhaust valve is very tight from the factory. Through vibrations or the rider's weight, the sensor is activated and triggers fault codes (P0475). This leads to "Transmission Fault" and "Check Engine" warnings and can trigger limp mode. The small adjustment screws on the valves need minimal fine-tuning. Stones can get jammed in the cable mechanism.
  • Gear position sensor reports incorrect values The gear position sensor reports incorrect values, leading to quickshifter failures, incorrect gear display, and "Transmission Fault" warnings. Warranty replacement documented. After replacement, the neutral position must be re-adapted.
  • Battery busbar screw on positive terminal too long from factory — loose connection The battery busbar screw on the positive terminal is in some cases too long from the factory, leading to a loose connection. Under vibration, contact is intermittently lost and triggers a cascade of fault messages: "Battery System Fault" followed by "Transmission Fault", "Check Engine", ABS fault, suspension fault. Quickshifter fails, limp mode possible. Restart clears the faults temporarily.
  • Exhaust valve cover detaches due to weld fracture on header The exhaust valve cover breaks off at the weld on the header and is lost during riding. The mounting point (tab) is welded onto the mid-section of the header — the weld fractures due to vibrations. Since the part is welded on, the repair requires a complete replacement of the exhaust system. Triumph has provided a revised part.
  • "Low Oil Pressure" warning appears intermittently despite adequate oil pressure The "Low Oil Pressure" warning appears intermittently on the display, although actual oil pressure is adequate. Triumph has acknowledged the problem and implemented two measures: (1) Hardware: Oil pump drive gear changed from 28 to 24 teeth (increased oil pressure), (2) Software: Control strategy revised, warning now latches (stays on until ignition off/on). Official NHTSA Technical Service Bulletin MC-10231151-9999 available. Note: Install oil filter AFTER filling oil, NOT pre-fill (NHTSA TSB MC-10203568-9999).
  • Keyless fuel cap requires significant force to close / electronic failure The keyless fuel cap requires significant force to close (pressing with palm of hand). The electronic opening mechanism can fail — fuel cap does not open or only after minutes. Individual cases of complete electronics failure during second refueling documented. Remedy: Silicone lubricant on the rubber filler seal ring monthly.
  • Navigation and Bluetooth connection of the My Triumph App do not work reliably The My Triumph App frequently loses Bluetooth connection, especially when the phone is in a jacket pocket. Navigation works only sporadically, even after software updates at the dealer. Some owners cannot even register their motorcycle in the app (timeout). Particularly affected: 2021 models. Music streaming often works while navigation simultaneously fails. Many owners use alternative solutions (Garmin, Quad Lock).
