The Stately Long-Haul King
The Road King Classic takes Harley's FL Touring chassis and dresses it in pure nostalgia: wide whitewall tires on laced wheels, leather-wrapped saddlebags and chrome wherever you look. Underneath sits a rubber-mounted, air-cooled Twin Cam. It's a 45° V-twin of 1584 cc with 102 lb-ft of torque, and it sends that through a 6-speed Cruise Drive gearbox and a belt to the rear wheel. Cruise control and the luggage system come standard. ABS was an option. In its class, this is the long, low, traditional way to own a touring Harley. Old-school, by design.
On paper, this is a machine for long days and heavy loads. A wet weight of 818 lb (371 kg), a 64.2 in (1,630 mm) wheelbase and that big torque figure all point to calm, planted cruising two-up with the bags full. The 6.0 gal (22.7 L) tank backs that up. At 27.4 in (695 mm), the seat keeps the ground within easy reach. The rear shock takes preload adjustment for a passenger and luggage, and the fork is non-adjustable. It's built for interstates and coastal highways, and you don't buy it to chase anyone. Distance is the point.

I haven't put these miles on myself. What follows is collected: talk at rallies and gas stops, long evenings with riding clubs, and the notes owners send me straight to my inbox. On the Road King Classic the pattern lands fast. What riders love happens once the bike is rolling. Most of what frustrates them shows up when it isn't.
Comfort leads, and by some distance. Riders describe soft suspension, a seat you sink down into, and a posture that keeps fatigue off them over very long days. This generation also earns steady credit for a more settled feel in corners, with noticeably less wallow. Torque is the other constant, on tap right off idle, which owners say makes overtaking and two-up riding easy work. Some bring up the classic look before anything mechanical.
Weight is the gripe raised most, and it belongs entirely to low speed. Owners describe wrestling the bike through parking lots and coming home tired from stop-and-go traffic. The gearbox splits them: clunky shifts, first gear the roughest, neutral that takes a second attempt. Brakes come up too, light on initial bite and needing a hard pull, with braided lines the usual remedy.
ABS recall: brake fluid flush needed
A safety recall (NHTSA 18V-076) was issued for 2008-2011 Touring models with ABS. Brake fluid may crystallize and block the ABS module, reducing braking ability. A one-time fluid flush with H-D Platinum Label fluid was offered free.
Stator and voltage regulator failures
Stators can fail, usually above 30,000 miles, leading to charging problems. The voltage regulator is also a known weak point. Aftermarket upgraded charging systems are a common retrofit.
