The Machine's Character

The Panigale R is the hard end of Ducati's V-twin superbike idea: a homologation special built to go World Superbike racing, then sold with a plate hanger on the back. The 1198 cc L-twin makes 205 hp and 100 lb-ft, and it carries that in a 406 lb wet motorcycle built around an aluminum monocoque that uses the engine as structure. Öhlins NIX30 fork, Öhlins TTX36 shock, Brembo M50 calipers on 330 mm discs, Ducati Quick Shift up and down, wheelie control, cornering ABS, ride-by-wire power modes. Nothing on this bike is decoration.

It ages the way genuine race hardware ages, which is well. The mechanical Öhlins responds properly to a rider who knows what a click actually changes, and the R rewards skill instead of papering over its absence. That is also the caveat. At everyday road pace it feels tightly wound and impatient, and it asks for a level of commitment most riders only find on a closed circuit. Buy it if track days are the reason you own a motorcycle at all. Skip it if you need something that stays pleasant in stop-and-go traffic, because it never will.

Known issues

Front brake master cylinder failure

brakes rare Recall

The Brembo front brake master cylinder piston can crack, leading to a sudden loss of front braking. This is a safety recall (NHTSA 17V812) affecting 2015-2017 Panigale R models. The remedy is a replacement piston installed free of charge.
Oil blow-by into airbox

Some 1299/R engines push oil through the crankcase breather into the airbox, potentially allowing oil to drip onto the rear tire. Ducati issued a recall kit with a revised blow-by valve to rectify the issue.
