The Machine's Character

The 959 Panigale is Ducati's supermid. It takes a 955 cc liquid-cooled L-twin making 150 hp and 79 lb-ft and puts it in an aluminum monocoque chassis with a 56.3 in (1,431 mm) wheelbase and a wet weight of 441 lb (200 kg). That combination is the whole point. You get real superbike acceleration and top speed without drowning in more power than you can use. It still looks like a Panigale, sharp and modern, and it comes with fully adjustable suspension at both ends, a steering damper, a slipper clutch, an up-shift quickshifter, ABS, traction control, and Ducati Ride-by-Wire Power Modes.

This bike rewards riders who want to feel what is going on underneath them. It talks to you clearly, and it has more lean clearance than you will use on any public road. It is for the experienced rider who spends weekends in the twisties or at the track. It is not for someone who needs an all-day commuter. The caveat is the electronics. You get solid basics, but no cornering ABS, no wheelie control, and no auto-blipper for downshifts. Ownership needs attention too: check that the brake master cylinder recall has been done, and keep an eye on the water pump idler gear.

The test ride

Thumb the starter and the L-twin barks into a deep, hard-edged idle that tells you exactly what brand you bought. Pull away and the sound hardens into a proper twin-cylinder bellow as the revs rise, and you will catch yourself holding gears longer than you need to just to hear it. The seat sits at 32.7 in (830 mm), and the riding position is committed. Your weight goes forward onto the bars, your knees tuck into a slim tank, and the whole bike feels narrow and compact under you. At a brisk road pace it stays calm and relays a steady stream of information through the bars and the seat, so you always have a feel for the surface under you. The 4.5 gal (17 L) tank means planned fuel stops on longer days. This is a bike that wants a destination full of corners, not a freeway slog to get there.

A winding two-lane asphalt road in the Appalachian mountains, photographed in dry daylight. Yellow double-center line markings guide through a series of tight left-hand curves. Dense deciduous and evergreen forest flanks both sides; a rock cut is visible on the right. The road surface and geometry suggest a technical, high-traffic riding corridor popular with motorcyclists.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 959 Panigale is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best motorcycle for Angeles Crest?

This is a canyon bike through and through. It has the lean clearance, feedback, and punch you want on the pass, but the committed riding position makes the LA traffic on the way there feel long.

Best motorcycle for Laguna Seca?

The adjustable suspension, slipper clutch, and huge lean clearance suit a track day perfectly. Just budget for downshifting without an auto-blipper and for working without cornering ABS.

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

On the Dragon it is precision and feedback that count, and the 959 gives you both in spades. The small tank means planning fuel stops for long days out of Atlanta or Charlotte.

Alternatives to the Ducati 959 Panigale

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Ducati 959 Panigale. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
