The Machine's Character

The RSV4 is built around a 999 cc V4 that runs to 201 hp at 13,000 rpm, and where that engine sits matters as much as the number. This is a narrow, short motorcycle: 55.9 in of wheelbase, mass stacked tight, nothing hanging out past the wheels. The APRC ride-by-wire system with three switchable maps, plus cornering ABS, traction control, ride modes and launch control, is there to make the performance usable rather than to sand it down. Peak torque of 85 lb-ft lands at 10,500 rpm, so the bike wants revs and pays you back for finding them.

The character stays consistent from the first mile to the last. It's precise, alert, and it expects you to be awake. Suspension is adjustable at both ends, a steering damper and an up-quickshifter come standard, and the chassis responds to setup work instead of fighting it. That tells you who it's for: riders with real skill who want feedback and a machine that answers instantly, not one that flatters them. The honest caveat is a 33.3 in seat and a riding position with zero touring pretensions. Cruise control and heated grips aren't part of this package.

The test ride

The first thing that gets you is the noise. The V4 has a hard mechanical howl that changes texture as it climbs, and at road speed you feel it in your chest as much as your ears. The bike is physically small underneath you. The tank is narrow where your knees clamp, the seat sits high, and your weight settles onto your wrists at anything below a brisk pace. Vibration stays fine-grained rather than numbing, so your hands still work after an hour. What I remember most is the constant read you get through the bars about what the front tire is doing. Lean angle never becomes a topic either. You run out of nerve, tire, or road long before the RSV4 runs out of clearance. On a real back road it feels compact and eager, and it never wanders.

Known issues

  • Front brake master cylinder may fail (2016-2017 models)

    brakes rare Recall

    Certain 2016-2017 RSV4 1000 models were recalled because the Brembo front brake master cylinder could fail, leading to loss of front braking. NHTSA Campaign 17V811000.

  • Front brake pad friction material detachment (2017-2020 models)

    brakes rare Recall

    The front brake pads could suffer separation of the friction material from the backing plate, especially in corrosive environments. This reduced braking efficiency and prompted NHTSA recall 20V-245.
