The Machine's Character

Yamaha's 689 cc parallel twin carries this bike: 73 hp at 8,750 rpm, 50 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm, and a torque peak sitting exactly where real roads live. Ride-by-wire feeds ride modes and traction control, cruise control is standard, and a TFT dash with smartphone connectivity handles the information side. The chassis is steel tube, with an upside-down fork, radial front brakes and adjustment at both ends. At 448 lb wet, the Tracer 7 sits at the light end of sport-touring and never pretends otherwise. It is the class welterweight, not its heavyweight.

Lived with, it ages cheaply. The twin takes miles without complaint, and the parts you actually consume are the ordinary ones: chain, tires, pads. The upright seating position still asks nothing of you on day three of a trip, and the 4.8 gal tank keeps highway stops sensibly spaced. This fits the rider covering 200 to 400 miles a day on good pavement who wants the corners in between to count for something. The honest caveat: loaded two-up, 73 hp is enough rather than generous, and the 32.7 in seat is tall enough that shorter riders should sit on one first.

The Long-Haul Verdict

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Tracer 7 is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best motorcycle for Highway 1?

This is your bike. Days of 200 to 400 miles on Highway 1 or the Blue Ridge are exactly what it's shaped for, and it stays genuinely fun in the corners instead of merely surviving them.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

Solo and packed light, it will happily cross a country on the 4.8 gal tank. Two-up with full luggage on big park grades, you'll want more engine under you and a factory touring setup.

Made for Beartooth Highway · Blue Ridge Parkway · Going-to-the-Sun Road

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

Light, honest and unintimidating, it lets you work on lines and corner speed instead of managing horsepower. For repeat runs on the Dragon or Cherohala, that's the quick way to get better.
