A Scrambler Built To Look At

The Machine's Character

Most scramblers borrow the look and skip the hardware. This one does the opposite. The Scrambler 1200 XE Icon Edition is a 2025-only run built on the XE. That means 9.8 in (250 mm) of suspension travel at both ends, a fully adjustable upside-down fork, adjustable twin shocks, a 21-inch front wheel and 10.0 in (255 mm) of ground clearance. That is real added value over the Bonneville family that supplies its 1200 cc liquid-cooled twin. The Icon package then dresses it properly, with Sapphire Black and silver paint, hand-painted coach lines, brushed aluminum tank details and the 1907 Edwardian gold script logo.

On the road it is a big, planted machine. It stays calm at highway speed and sounds the part, and the build quality holds up to a close look. It suits the rider who wants a heritage motorcycle with real dirt-road ability and a finish worth keeping. The honest caveat is size. A 34.3 in (870 mm) seat, 507 lb (230 kg) wet and a 4.0 gal (15 L) tank make it tall and heavy, and it needs fuel sooner than you'd like. One owner has reported the engine cutting out while riding, and a software glitch was suspected. It is a single report, it has not been widely reported, and no recall exists.

The Truth on the Street

For years I've listened to what owners tell me: in the paddock, at club nights, and in the messages riders send after a season on their bikes. On the Scrambler 1200 XE the pattern is consistent. The engine and suspension earn most of the praise, while the complaints center on height and weight.

Torque, travel and all-day comfort

Owners talk about the engine first. They describe a wave of torque from low rpm that makes both pavement and dirt feel easy, along with a distinctive firing order and a rich exhaust note. The suspension comes up almost as often. Riders say it absorbs bumps well, rewards time spent with the adjusters and stays composed on rough trails and fast sweepers. Many also like the upright position, wide bar and relaxed knee angle for comfortable long days, and they point to the brakes, tires and TFT dash as premium touches.

Tall and heavy when it counts

The most frequent gripe is the seat, which owners rank among the tallest in the class. Shorter riders call it intimidating at low speed and on rough footing. Weight is the other recurring complaint. Owners feel it most when lifting the bike after a drop or muscling it through technical sections, and some say it limits the XE as a true dirt bike.

Known issues

  • Engine cut-out while riding

    engine rare

A single owner reported the engine died unexpectedly while riding; a software glitch was suspected. This has not been widely reported and no recall exists.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Scrambler 1200 XE Icon Edition is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

For small-town loops on the Kancamagus or up to Maggie Valley, it has the style and standard cruise control. Just plan your fuel stops around the 4.0 gal tank.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

If sound, style and turning heads on Main Street matter most, this delivers. Just know it sits tall and upright like a scrambler, not low like a cruiser.

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

Weekend loops out of Austin suit it well, and the long-travel suspension handles rough county roads. It's a stylish weekend bike, not a sport tourer.

Alternatives to the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE Icon Edition

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE Icon Edition. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
