The Machine's Character

BMW built the C 650 Sport around a 647 cc liquid-cooled parallel twin making 60 hp at 7,500 rpm and 46 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm. That is real motorcycle output wrapped in twist-and-go packaging. The automatic transmission does the thinking for you, an upside-down fork and dual 10.6 in (270 mm) front discs do the physical work, and ABS, traction control, tire pressure monitoring and adjustable rear suspension all come as standard. It sits at the sharp end of the maxi-scooter class: a premium machine that treats city riding as a serious discipline rather than an afterthought.

It rides planted rather than flighty, which is the BMW way. The 549 lb wet weight settles it at speed, and the 31.5 in seat puts you high enough to read traffic two cars ahead. A 112 mph (180 km/h) top speed covers freeway links without drama, though this is a machine happiest inside city limits and on the roads just outside them. It has aged well, and 47 mpg keeps ownership cheap. The honest caveat: early 2016 bikes could suffer a failing hydraulic timing chain tensioner, which starts as a rattle and can end in serious engine damage. Ask for service records.
