Air-Cooled Soul, Premium Muscle

The Machine's Character

The S2R 1000 is the Monster at its air-cooled peak. Its 992 cc Desmodue L-twin is the largest version of that two-valve engine, with twin-plug heads and a stout mid-range that pulls cleanly from 3,000 rpm up to its 69 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm. Peak output is 95 hp. That figure won't win a spec sheet war, and it doesn't need to, because the way the power arrives is the point. Ducati gave it the single-sided swingarm and stacked exhaust styling of the water-cooled S4R and hung everything on a steel trellis frame with adjustable suspension at both ends. It looks expensive, and it rides like a more modern bike than the cooling fins suggest.

On the road it is light on its feet and tells you clearly what the tires are doing, so it rewards riders who like to feel the bike working underneath them. At 437 lb (198 kg) wet with a 31.5 in (800 mm) seat, it never intimidates. The air-cooled, two-valve layout keeps it easy to work on, and the aftermarket for these Monsters is deep. The caveat is plain. There is no ABS, no traction control and no slipper clutch, so your right hand and right foot are the only safety net. Buy one with a documented history, especially an early 2006 bike, and expect the quirks that come with an air-cooled Ducati of this age.

The Truth on the Street

Over the years I've heard plenty about the S2R 1000: in paddock conversations, from owners at club nights, and in the emails and messages riders send me once they've lived with one. The pattern is consistent. Owners rave about the engine and the way the bike takes a corner, and they're just as frank about what it does to their bodies and their patience in town.

An engine and chassis owners trust

Riders consistently describe a muscular twin with enough pull in top gear to pass without touching the shifter. Owners who came off earlier Monsters say the twin-plug engine runs smoother and is easier to manage at low revs. In corners, the word that keeps coming up is confidence. The bike feels light and responsive and invites a proper lean, especially on smooth pavement.

Where town riding wears thin

The complaint riders raise most often is the riding position. The low seat tips them forward and the pegs sit far back, so wrists and lower back take the strain on longer rides. In traffic, a clunky transmission in the low gears means constant shifting. A tight steering lock turns U-turns and parking into careful clutch work. Riders also report that the suspension, adjustable or not, sends sharp jolts through on broken pavement.

Known issues

  • Valve guide wear on early 2006 models

    engine occasional

Some early production S2R 1000 units suffered from premature valve guide wear, requiring top-end inspection or rebuild; later bikes received updated guides.

  • Engine leans surges and backfires at steady throttle

    fuel system occasional

Lean factory mapping to meet emissions regulations can cause surging and popping during constant-speed cruising; not fully fixed by aftermarket fuel controllers.

  • Starter motor corrosion and connection failures

    electrics rare

Exposure to road debris and water leads to corrosion at the starter motor terminals, causing intermittent starting issues or total failure.

  • Fuel tank swelling and paint cracking

    bodywork common

The nylon fuel tank can absorb moisture from modern ethanol-blended fuels, causing expansion and cracks in the paint. Affected tanks may fail to fit properly on their mounts.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Monster S2R 1000 is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best motorcycle for Angeles Crest?

On Angeles Crest this is a sweet tool: light, communicative and with clearance to spare. With 95 hp and no rider aids, it's a precision bike, not a straight-line bully.

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

On the Dragon and Cherohala, light steering and clear feedback count for more than horsepower, and that's exactly where this Monster shines. Clean technique pays off in every bend.

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

It suits a Saturday loop out of Austin perfectly, sounds great rolling into town and turns heads at the BBQ stop. The 3.7 gal tank and zero wind protection limit long road-trip days.
