101 Scout (MY2025)

Hot-Rod Attitude, Modern Guts

The Machine's Character

The 101 Scout puts a 1250 cc liquid-cooled 60° V-twin in a steel frame and asks it for 111 hp and 82 lb-ft, which is real muscle in the mid-size cruiser class. The stance is pure chopper: long and low, blacked-out engine cases, a 26.8 in seat, forward controls, a slim 19-inch front wheel ahead of a fat 16-inch rear. Underneath sit a 6-speed box, an upside-down fork, suspension you can adjust at both ends, ABS, traction control and ride modes, with Indian Ride Command handling the screen. Hot-rod attitude, current hardware.

It weighs 549 lb (249 kg) wet, and the low center of gravity hides a fair share of that once the wheels are turning. The bike likes a rhythm: roll away on torque, short-shift, let the twin do the work instead of chasing revs. It ages the way heavy metal usually does, by collecting parts, and the aftermarket depth here means few of these stay stock for long. This one is for riders who want American identity with actual pace behind it. The honest caveat is the 3.4 gal (13 L) tank. Plan your fuel stops, because long days get broken up more often than the rest of the bike suggests.

The Voice of Experience

The test ride

You walk up with the key in your pocket, thumb the starter, and the twin settles into a beat you feel through the pegs before you really register the sound. The seat is low enough that both boots go flat at a light, which changes how a 549 lb machine feels the first time you paddle it out of a parking spot. Forward controls stretch you out, the bars come back toward you, and there is more room for long legs than the silhouette promises. At road pace the 60° twin keeps a steady pulse running through the tank and grips, present enough that the bike feels alive in your hands, never numb and never clattering. Liquid cooling keeps things civil when traffic stops moving. Your hands stay bare unless you order the heated grips, and you will think about that on a cold morning.

A long, straight paved road stretches toward the horizon through agricultural fields in Vermont. Power lines and a mailbox are visible along the roadside. Lush green vegetation, cumulus clouds, good daylight conditions. The landscape is flat to gently rolling. Asphalt pavement appears to be in good condition. Rural American setting.

The Truth on the Street

Known issues

  • False gear indication (NHTSA 24V‑970 recall)

    electrics common Recall

The rider display may show an incorrect gear, including neutral, potentially causing unintended movement. Indian has issued a recall (I‑24‑11) requiring an ECM software update to correct the fault. All affected bikes must have the update before delivery.

  • Starter cable melting/fire risk

    electrics rare

One owner reported a melted starter cable, white smoke from the engine area, and a dead battery at low mileage. The cause is under investigation, but the issue could be related to an electrical short or faulty assembly.

  • Ride Command glitches and slow response

    electrics occasional

Multiple owners report occasional display freezes, spontaneous reboots, and sluggish touch response. While not mechanical, these can be distracting and detract from the otherwise premium tech experience.

  • Cold stalling at low RPM

    engine occasional

Some owners report that the engine stalls shortly after a cold start unless allowed to warm up for a moment; sluggish low-speed response may accompany the issue. A 2025 service advisory suggests ECU updates improve low-speed operation.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the 101 Scout is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

This is your bike. It brings the stance, the V-twin beat and the presence you show up for, and it backs the imagery with 111 hp so you're never the slow one rolling into town.

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

Small towns and old routes suit it well, and the low seat plus relaxed controls make short days pleasant. Just accept that the 3.4 gal tank sets the rhythm of your stops.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

It's stable and unbothered at highway speed, but this is a chopper first. Luggage is an option rather than standard, the tank is small, and two-up with full gear is not what it was drawn for.
