Old Soul, New Firepower

The Machine's Character

The 2025 Sport Scout is a cruiser with its attitude up front. A liquid-cooled 60-degree V-twin of 1250 cc makes 105 hp and 82 lb-ft, and the steel tube frame uses it as a stressed member. The tall 19-inch front wheel and the quarter fairing give it the stance of a factory custom, lean and nose-high, not the usual fat-tired cruiser silhouette. Look at it three times and the build quality still holds up. ABS, an adjustable rear shock and an LED headlight come standard. Traction control, ride modes, cruise control and the TFT with Ride Command connectivity are options.

On the road it is calmer than the look suggests. At highway speed the chassis stays planted and settled, and the engine runs smoother once it is off idle. At 547 lb (248 kg) wet it is no lightweight, but the mass sits low and never feels top-heavy. This bike is for riders who want an Indian with real presence and who plan to make it their own, because few cruisers take aftermarket parts this readily. The honest caveat is range and electrics. The 3.4 gal (12.9 L) tank is small, and the known electrical faults are worth checking before you buy.

A long, straight paved road stretches toward the horizon through agricultural fields in Vermont. Power lines and a mailbox are visible along the roadside. Lush green vegetation, cumulus clouds, good daylight conditions. The landscape is flat to gently rolling. Asphalt pavement appears to be in good condition. Rural American setting.

The Truth on the Street

This picture comes from years of listening: paddock talk, owner chats at club nights, and the messages riders send me directly. On the 2025 Sport Scout the pattern is clear. Owners like the way it looks and the way it pulls through the middle of the rev range. The complaints show up at the bottom and the top of the range.

Clean lines and a midrange shove

The styling gets the most consistent praise. Riders like how it blends classic cruiser cues with a clean, modern finish, and owners point out how neatly even the cables are routed. The engine comes next. Riders consistently describe it waking up from 4,000 rpm, with a strong midrange rush that makes passing and brisk riding easy. Some also say it feels lighter and more nimble than a traditional cruiser, and that it steers more precisely than the relaxed riding position suggests.

Rough edges low and high

The gripes are fewer and come from individual owners. Some say that below 3,000 rpm the twin can lug and shudder, hesitating and occasionally stalling, which makes stop-and-go traffic a chore. Others report a noticeable buzz through the grips, tank and pegs once the revs pass 5,000 rpm. Cruiser loyalists accept it. Riders used to smoother engines call it intrusive.

Known issues

  • False neutral gear indication (NHTSA recall 24V‑970)

    electrics common Recall

The display may show neutral when the bike is in gear, leading to unintended movement and potential crash. Fixed by ECM reflash.

  • Electrical system failures causing stalling or no‑start

    electrics occasional

Owners report sudden electrical shutdowns, melted starter wire, and battery drain; suspected faulty wiring or component issues.

  • Oil leaking from stripped drain plug

    engine rare

At least one report of a stripped oil drain plug causing a significant oil leak, requiring dealer intervention. Not yet known if this is a factory defect or user error.

  • Fuel gauge inaccuracy

    fuel system occasional

The fuel gauge reads full long after riding, then suddenly drops to empty with only a few miles remaining. The blinking low‑fuel light can come on while the gauge still indicates half full.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Sport Scout is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

If your year revolves around Sturgis and Daytona, this Indian brings real presence and a twin that sounds the part. Plan your fuel stops on the ride in, though. 3.4 gal doesn't go far.

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

For unhurried miles through small towns and historic routes, the low seat and smooth midrange suit the rhythm. It looks more custom than classic, so make sure that style is yours.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

Straight answer: this shouldn't be your long-haul bike. It's stable at speed, but the small tank means frequent stops and luggage is optional. It's great for a park loop, not for crossing the country.

Alternatives to the Indian Sport Scout

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Indian Sport Scout. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
