The R 18 B takes the 1802 cc air/oil-cooled boxer and wraps it in a full touring fairing with hard luggage at the back. The numbers read 91 hp and 117 lb-ft, and the torque is the headline: this engine is built around pull, not revs. Shaft drive, six speeds, 66.7 inches between the axles. What sets it apart inside the cruiser class is how much technology arrives with the look. ABS, traction control, and ride modes are standard, and so are a TFT display, keyless ignition, cruise control, and heated grips.

On the road it behaves the way this class should. Low center of gravity, long wheelbase, and a seat at 28.3 inches that most riders can plant flat. It takes a straight 10.0 on my sheet for chopper stance, elegance, character, and retro line, and the 9.3 for build quality means the finish still reads expensive after a few seasons of weather. The caveat is mass. At 877 pounds wet it wants planning in parking lots and slow traffic, and the front fork gives you nothing to dial in. Buy it for presence and long-haul calm, not agility.

Headlight reflector detachment (NHTSA recall 23V884)

electrics rare Recall

The low-beam reflector attachment points may break, causing the reflector to shift and resulting in reduced or misdirected illumination. Affected units: 2021–2024 R 18 B and Transcontinental.
Reverse gear control unit overheating (NHTSA recall 24V716)

drivetrain rare Recall

The sealing of the optional reverse-gear control unit may deteriorate, allowing moisture ingress and corrosion of internal contacts. This can lead to overheating and, in very rare cases, a thermal event. Interim remedy disconnects the unit until final replacement is available.
Fork head screw torque may be insufficient

Owners have reported that the fork head screw can leave the factory undertorqued, which can allow play in the steering head and unsettle the front end. Reported only in isolated cases, but worth a torque check on an early bike.
Left cylinder head catastrophic failure

engine rare

A small number of owners have reported major engine damage centred on the left cylinder head, with blue smoke as the giveaway symptom; BMW replaced the affected head under warranty rather than the complete engine. Isolated rather than systemic, but check service history and listen for smoke on a cold start.
