Rally DNA, Street Ready

The Machine's Character

The World Rally is the long-distance build of Yamaha's middleweight Tenere, and it wears the 1993 Dakar racing colors for a reason. Fuel sits in twin side-mounted tanks holding 6.1 gal (23 L), the fully adjustable long-travel suspension gives 9.1 in (230 mm) at the front and 8.7 in (220 mm) at the rear, and a steering damper keeps the 21-inch front wheel honest when the surface stops being smooth. The 689 cc parallel twin makes 73 hp and 50 lb-ft, a titanium slip-on saves weight, and the flat two-piece rally seat lets you move your body wherever the terrain wants it.

This bike makes its case over distance rather than in a spec comparison. At 49 mpg with 6.1 gal (23 L) aboard, close to 300 miles between stops is routine, and the twin sits at cruising speed without strain on the way to 118 mph (190 km/h). Equipment stays purposeful: ABS, a TFT display, smartphone connectivity, a USB port, LED lighting, and suspension you adjust by hand at both ends. It fits the rider who wants genuine off-road capability and refuses to trade away range for it. The honest caveat is size. A 35.0 in (890 mm) seat and 485 lb (220 kg) wet ask something of you at every stop.

The Voice of Experience

Portrait of NastyNils

The test ride

Swing a leg over and the bike feels narrower between your knees than the fuel capacity suggests, because the weight sits low and to the sides rather than up high. The seat is genuinely flat, so sliding forward for a tight turn or back for a loose descent takes no thought at all. Stand up and the bar reach lands where a tall rider wants it, with room on the pegs to work your feet around. The twin has a mechanical, workmanlike voice through the titanium can, more thrum than bark, and there is a steady buzz through the footpegs at highway revs that stays present without ever going numb. At 70 mph the screen puts air across your chest and helmet. You feel every pound at walking pace and almost none of it once the wheels are rolling.

The Truth on the Street

Known issues

  • Clutch drag and unintended motion

    drivetrain common Recall

Affected 2023–2024 CP2-engined models (MT-07, XSR700, Tenere 700) may experience clutch drag while in neutral and a squealing noise when cold. In severe cases, it can cause unintended movement. Yamaha issued a recall to replace the clutch steel and friction discs.

Best motorcycle for Highway 1?

It handles Blue Ridge and Highway 1 days happily at a flowing pace. You sit tall and exposed with no cruise control, so the slab miles between the good roads are work rather than rest.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

Range is not the problem, with close to 300 miles a tank. Two-up on a 35.0 in seat with no factory luggage is asking a lot, so this suits solo big-mile riders who want dirt access more than plush comfort.
