DesertX (Mark 2)

The DesertX Mark 2 is a real adventure bike from Ducati, not a road bike dressed up with knobbies. The numbers show it: a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear, 9.1 in (230 mm) of travel up front, 8.7 in (220 mm) out back and 9.8 in (250 mm) of ground clearance. The engine is an 890 cc liquid-cooled L-twin making 110 hp and 68 lb-ft, with variable valve timing tuned for pull at low revs. Ducati Ride-by-Wire Power Modes, traction control, ABS, an up-and-down quickshifter and cruise control are all standard. And very little in this class looks as purposeful parked at a trailhead.

It rides sharp and direct, with a sporty chassis and enough lean clearance that you can use a lot of angle before anything touches down. The suspension adjusts at both ends, so you can set it up for sand, rock or a loaded weekend. Routine servicing is simple by Ducati standards, and that counts if you plan to keep the bike for years. It suits experienced riders who want real terrain ability and Italian character in the same machine. The honest caveat: the 34.6 in (880 mm) seat and 4.8 gal (18 L) tank will ask something of shorter riders and anyone planning long days between fuel stops.
