DesertX Discovery (MY2024)

4.5 / 5 NastyNils Rating · against its class

Dakar Looks, Expedition Equipped

The Machine's Character

The DesertX Discovery takes Ducati's 937 cc L-twin, 110 hp at 9,250 rpm and 68 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm, and wraps it in a chassis built for dirt rather than adapted to it. A 21-inch front wheel, 9.1 inches of front travel, 8.7 inches at the rear and 9.8 inches of ground clearance put it in the genuinely dual-sport half of the middleweight adventure class. The Discovery kit adds the expedition hardware you would otherwise buy piece by piece: reinforced skid plate, crash bars, heated grips, center stand. Cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control and ride modes are standard, along with a quickshifter both ways and cruise control.

On the road it behaves like a tall, long-legged Ducati that has been taught patience. The L-twin pulls cleanly from the middle of the range and the 63.3-inch wheelbase keeps things calm at highway speed. Off pavement it carries its 492 lb better than the number reads once you are moving, which is the whole point of that 21-inch front and the fully adjustable suspension. This is a bike for a rider who actually goes looking for dirt and wants presence while doing it. The caveats are honest ones. At 34.4 inches the seat rules people out before the first mile, and the stock rims have cracked on riders who hammer rocky trails hard and often.

Known issues

The Long-Haul Verdict

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the DesertX Discovery is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best motorcycle for Moab?

Slickrock, sand and rocky steps are exactly what the 21-inch front and 9.1 inches of travel are for. It is heavier than a pure enduro, so pick your lines, but the clearance and the legs are there.

Best motorcycle for Highway 1?

Twisty pavement suits it far better than a 21-inch front wheel suggests. Lean clearance is huge, the view over the bars is excellent, and 5.5 gal covers a proper day loop. Just know it is a tall bike to live with.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

Cruise control, heated grips and a 5.5 gal tank make the long days workable, but this is a lean, tall dirt-focused machine at heart. Fully loaded two-up is not where it is happiest, and luggage costs extra.

Alternatives to the Ducati DesertX Discovery

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Ducati DesertX Discovery. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
