Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE (DS04-MY2024) vs BMW R nineT Scrambler (K23)

On a light throttle out of a stoplight, the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE's parallel twin pulls from barely off idle and doesn't run out of grunt. The BMW R nineT Scrambler's air-and-oil-cooled boxer leans on its low-end torque just as early. Every twist comes back with a feel that's pure boxer.

What makes each one tick

Scrambler 1200 XE

Off the pavement, the Scrambler 1200 XE stays steady over rocks and loose gravel while its long-travel suspension soaks up the hits. Ruts don't push the front around. There's serious bite at the brake lever, and the bike hauls down hard. Its exhaust answers with a rorty bark.

R nineT Scrambler

Twisty pavement brings out the R nineT Scrambler, whose engine keeps driving hard from one bend to the next. Corner entry doesn't take any fuss, since the bike turns in quickly and stays planted once it's leaned over. Broken pavement finds a fork that's soft, and the shock jolts back hard, especially under a heavier rider. Its steel frame holds the line.

  • Wiring loom chafing on steering movement (early models) On early production models, the wiring loom near the steering head could rub and cause electrical failures to the headlight or instruments. BMW later added a plastic sheath.
  • Engine oil consumption (especially early miles) Some riders report noticeable oil consumption in the first 10,000 miles, requiring regular top-ups. Usually resolves as the engine breaks in.
