Tech-Loaded Triple With Soul
Everything on the Tracer 9 is built around one engine: Yamaha's 890 cc CP3 inline-three, with 119 hp at 10,000 rpm and 69 lb-ft at 7,000 rpm. It sits in an aluminum twin-spar frame on 17-inch wheels at both ends, which puts it in the sport-touring camp and not with the adventure crowd. The standard equipment list is long. ABS, traction control, wheelie control and ride modes are all there, along with cruise control, a slipper clutch, a TFT dash, cornering lights and adjustable suspension front and rear. Electronic suspension and Yamaha's Y-AMT automated manual are on the options list. It's a triple with a full toolkit!
On paper, the hardware points to a rider who covers real distance and still wants the road to bend. The touring half is clear: a 5.0 gal (19 L) tank, an adjustable windscreen, an adjustable seat at 33.3 in (845 mm) and cruise control as standard. The other half is just as plain. At 487 lb (221 kg) wet on a 59.1 in (1,500 mm) wheelbase, it's sized like a sporty road bike rather than a full-dress tourer. Add the optional luggage and heated grips and you have a bike built for long days that finish on a mountain pass. That's the whole idea.
