Bear 650 (MY2025)

The Backroad Style Twin

The Machine's Character

The Bear 650 is Royal Enfield's 648 cc air/oil-cooled parallel twin dressed properly for the dirt road. The 47 hp and 42 lb-ft won't win a numbers contest, and they aren't meant to. What sets this generation apart is its scrambler identity: an upside-down fork, a 19-inch front wheel on a 100/90 tire, a steel double-cradle frame and a stance that passes the three-glance rule easily. It looks right from every angle, and the build carries it. The bike also comes with a TFT display with navigation and smartphone connectivity, ABS, a slipper clutch, LED headlight and USB charging, all standard. That's a fair kit for a bike that sells on charm.

This is a bike for riders who want to get off the fast lane, take the county road and keep going when the pavement turns to packed gravel. It's accessible, cheap to run at 57 mpg, and it's an easy bike to make your own because the aftermarket potential is huge. Now the caveat. By my scrambler yardstick, 5.1 in (130 mm) of travel up front and 4.5 in (115 mm) at the rear is short. The fork has no adjustment at all, and the rear shock only adjusts for preload. Treat the Bear as a road bike that handles light dirt, not a trail tool, and it won't disappoint you.

Alternatives to the Royal Enfield Bear 650

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Royal Enfield Bear 650. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
