Where City Agility Meets Italian Character

The Machine's Character

The GTS 300 Super Sport is Vespa's big-body scooter in its sportiest dress, and the thing that sets it apart is how it's built: a steel monocoque, so the bodywork itself is the structure. Inside sits a 278 cc liquid-cooled single making 24 hp at 8,250 rpm and 19 lb-ft at 5,250 rpm, sending drive to the rear wheel through a CVT and belt. Keyless ignition, full LED lighting, traction control and ABS are standard, and Vespa says that package delivers a premium feel and added safety. Smartphone connectivity, a USB port and a center stand come with it too. Style first, substance included.

Read the spec sheet and the purpose is plain. At 342 lb (155 kg) wet, on 12-inch wheels with a 31.1 in (790 mm) seat, this hardware is built for dense traffic, tight parking and short, frequent trips. A listed 74 mpg from a 2.2 gal (8.5 L) tank keeps your running costs low, and the rear shock takes preload if you load it up with a passenger. Heated grips are an option. On paper it points to a rider who wants the Vespa name and the design that comes with it, but who still needs a scooter that earns its keep every weekday. Beautiful and useful.

The Truth on the Street

This isn't my test ride. It's what I've heard from owners over the years in the paddock, at club nights, over coffee after a ride and in the messages riders send me. On the GTS 300 Super Sport the pattern is clear: owners love how it looks, rides and pulls, and they complain about very little.

Style that earns its keep

The design comes up first and most often. Owners talk about the timeless styling, the premium finish and the attention to detail, and they say it turns heads in a way mainstream rivals don't. Close behind comes the riding. Riders keep describing it as stable and well balanced, even at higher speeds, with lively response off the line and a strong midrange that puts it among the quickest scooters in its class. Comfort gets the same praise: a natural riding position, a plush seat and wind protection that does its job, so owners happily spend a whole day on it. Rare for a scooter!

Where a few owners hold back

The gripes are few, and each comes from only a handful of owners. Some find the price steep next to rivals, though they add that it buys more refinement and brand cachet. Others say the handlebar switches work fine but feel plasticky, and they're not sure how well they'll hold up. That's the whole list.

Known issues

  • Fuel pump failure (recall)

    fuel system occasional Recall

Certain 2022-2023 Vespa GTS 300 models were recalled to replace faulty fuel pumps that could fail, causing engine stalling. Affected VINs received a free replacement via campaign PP2ZZQ2106.

  • Drive belt failure if maintenance neglected

    drivetrain occasional

The CVT drive belt is known to fail if not regularly inspected and replaced according to service intervals. Neglecting this maintenance can lead to sudden loss of drive and breakdown.

  • Rear brake squeal

    brakes occasional

Some owners report a persistent screeching noise from the rear disc brake, especially during the first 620 mi (1000 km). It usually resolves after bedding-in or dealer adjustment.

  • Minor wheel wobble from new

    chassis rare

A few owners noted out-of-round or unbalanced wheels upon delivery, causing mild vibration. Typically corrected by the dealer under warranty.

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Vespa GTS 300 Super Sport. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
