Iconic Style, Electric Soul

The Machine's Character

This is a Vespa with a message: a limited-run electric scooter built in partnership with (RED), finished in red from the bodywork to the Nubuck seat, and tied to support for the Global Fund's fight against pandemics. Underneath sits an air-cooled electric motor with 5 hp and 148 lb-ft, a single-speed drive and a top speed of 45 mph (72 km/h). ABS and ride modes are standard. So are a TFT display, smartphone connectivity, a USB charging port and an LED headlight. At 287 lb (130 kg) on a 12-inch front wheel and an 11-inch rear, it's built for the city and nothing else. A statement on two wheels!

In town it's about as easy as two wheels get: light, eager to change direction, smooth off the line and dead simple to operate. It's for you if your rides are short and urban, if you care how your scooter looks parked outside the café, and if you like doing it without noise or exhaust. It's not the rational pick, and it doesn't pretend to be. The honest caveat is ownership: usable range can drop noticeably after 9 to 12 months of city use, cool weather can slow charging, and the motor and controller are sealed black boxes that few mechanics can repair once the warranty ends. Buy it with open eyes.

The Truth on the Street

I've spent years listening to riders: in the paddock, at club nights, in chats with owners and in the emails and messages that land in my inbox. For the Vespa Elettrica RED, the picture is consistent. Owners talk most about the finish and the quiet drivetrain, while the complaints are fewer and come from individual voices.

Head-turning finish, calm electric drive

Riders consistently describe a high-quality finish on classic Italian scooter styling, and they like that it turns heads. Just as often they bring up the electric drive: no vibration, less noise pollution and lower running costs. A good share of owners add that it gives them confidence in urban traffic, despite its weight. That's the core of it.

Slow launch, fixed battery, high price

The gripes come up less often. Some owners mention a leisurely launch: no instant electric surge, sluggish in Eco mode, hesitant in busy traffic. Others point to the battery, which can't be removed. You need to park near an outlet, and that's limiting if you live in an apartment. Price is the third: owners call it significantly more expensive than equivalent scooters. Fewer voices, but they're there.

Known issues

  • Battery range degradation over time

    electrics occasional

Some owners report a noticeable drop in usable range after 9-12 months of city use, with occasional slow charging or charge loss in cooler temperatures.

  • Electric drivetrain repairability concerns

    engine rare

The electric motor and control system are 'black boxes' with no user-serviceable parts. When faults occur outside warranty, few mechanics have the expertise to repair them, leading to potentially costly replacements.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?

You'll love the electric drive and the all-red look, and it's great for getting across the city. The weekend ridge roads are another story: with a 45 mph (72 km/h) top speed, it stays in town.

If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Vespa Elettrica RED. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
