The Leather-Saddled Collector's Piece

The Machine's Character

The 946 Horse is Vespa's numbered limited edition for the Year of the Horse, and it doesn't hide its priorities. Bay brown paint, gold detailing and a handcrafted Italian leather saddle with a horseshoe emblem set the tone. Vespa says Italian artisans make that saddle and the leather trim by hand. Underneath sits a steel monocoque body, a 125 cc air-cooled single-cylinder and 12-inch wheels, with ABS as standard. On paper that's a modest technical package wrapped in a very deliberate piece of design. Collectible first. Transport second!

Read the hardware and the intent is clear. A 125 cc single on 12-inch wheels is built for town, not long highway stretches. The 8.7 in (220 mm) front disc and a rear shock with preload adjustment point to short urban trips at a relaxed pace. Vespa calls the Horse a collectible fashion piece, and that's the honest way to see it: it suits someone who already has a practical way to get around and wants an object that makes every ride feel like an occasion. Utility isn't the brief. Style is.

A mix of glass-and-steel skyscrapers and mid-rise residential towers fills the frame. A construction crane is active on the left.
