Agile Beyond the Asphalt

The Machine's Character

The SR GT 200 is Aprilia's take on an urban adventure scooter, and the label fits. The liquid-cooled 174 cc single makes 18 hp at 8,500 rpm and 12 lb-ft of torque, which is strong for its class. The chassis is what really sets it apart. A steel tube frame carries long-travel Showa suspension and 6.9 in (175 mm) of ground clearance, so cobblestones, broken pavement and the odd gravel detour don't faze it. ABS, full LED lighting and a USB charging port come standard. Aprilia's MIA smartphone connectivity is available as an option.

Day to day, this is an easy scooter to live with. It weighs 320 lb (145 kg) wet, it's compact, it's simple to operate and it's cheap to run. The build quality also feels a notch above the budget end of the class. It suits riders who commute on bad city streets and like being able to wander off the pavement now and then. The honest caveat is the 71 mph (114 km/h) top speed, which makes freeways a stretch. On some units the side stand mounting bolt can bend or break after a year of use, so inspect it. One owner has also reported wobbling at high speed, though no wider pattern has been confirmed.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?

It handles the San Francisco commute well and can do a relaxed Sunday run up Skyline, but with 18 hp it's a city tool first. If you like tech, you can add Aprilia's optional MIA connectivity.
