Niken (MY2023)

Three Wheels, Real Confidence

The Machine's Character

Nothing else in the naked class looks like the Niken, or grips like it. Its Leaning Multi Wheel front end puts two 15-inch front tires on the road, and both lean with you. Behind them, an 890 cc liquid-cooled inline-three sends 115 hp and 67 lb-ft through a six-speed box and chain to a 190-section rear. That makes it quick rather than savage. Yamaha equips it properly: ABS, traction control, ride modes, a two-way quickshifter, slipper clutch, cruise control, a TFT with navigation, adjustable suspension at both ends and an adjustable screen. This is a Yamaha with a clear identity, and that identity is grip.

It rides like a big, planted naked bike that refuses to be unsettled. Grip on wet, broken or unfamiliar pavement is the whole point, and it lets you commit to lean angles you would think twice about on two wheels. It stays composed at speed, and the triple pulls cleanly from low revs. The honest caveat is mass. At 595 lb (270 kg) wet with a 32.9 in (835 mm) seat, parking lots, U-turns and tight garages are real work. Buy it if you value confidence over agility and don't mind being noticed. Skip it if a light, flickable naked is what makes you grin.

A winding asphalt road descending through the Appalachian Mountains, likely the famous Tail of the Dragon section in Tennessee and North Carolina. Multiple technical right-hand and left-hand curves are visible in this aerial perspective, surrounded by deciduous forest in spring foliage. Clear sunny conditions, well-maintained asphalt with yellow center lines marking the curves.
