MT-03 (RH07)

3.5 / 5 NastyNils Rating · against its class

Light, Cheap, Revs Hard

The Machine's Character

The MT-03 is the smallest twin in Yamaha's MT family, and its case rests almost entirely on the engine sitting in the middle of it. That 321 cc liquid-cooled parallel twin is the same unit that powers the YZF-R3: 42 hp at 10,750 rpm, 22 lb-ft at 9,000 rpm, and a willingness to rev that makes the whole bike feel more alive than the figures suggest. Around it sits a steel diamond frame, 17-inch wheels front and rear, and 370 lb of wet weight. ABS is the rider aid on this one, and it is the only one on the list.

On the road it flatters rather than tests. It pulls cleanly from low revs in town, stays composed as speeds climb, and asks very little back: fuel is cheap, the maintenance is undramatic, and the parts shelf for this platform runs deep enough that bars, exhausts and bodywork are easy to come by. This is a genuinely good first big bike and an equally good second one for a rider who values lightness over output. The honest caveat is that the real drive lives high in the range, so a quick highway overtake wants a downshift and a firm handful.

The Truth on the Street

None of this is my own ride. It comes from years of listening: paddock talk, owner conversations, club nights, and the messages riders send me directly. On the MT-03 that chatter settles into a clear pattern, wide agreement on the strengths and a steady list of gripes.

The little twin with two personalities

The engine leads every conversation. Riders describe two personalities in one motor, smooth and linear low down where it pulls like a single, then a real rush at the top that feels closer to a four. Owners say it punches above its displacement. Handling comes next: flickable in traffic, stable in corners, and neutral enough in its steering that newer riders relax quickly. Shorter riders bring up the reach to the ground, commuters the upright seat they sit on all day.

Where the budget starts showing

The steadiest complaint is that it feels built to a price. Riders point to basic brake hardware and a thin features list, and say it doesn't feel as upmarket as pricier rivals. Suspension is the next theme. Soft at both ends, it dips under hard braking and wallows in fast corners, more so two-up. Highway work draws the rest, the engine working hard at speed and buffeting that owners notice with nothing out front.

Known issues

  • Radiator leaks

    cooling rare

One owner reported the radiator developed leaks after around one year of ownership due to a suspected manufacturing defect. Coolant loss required radiator replacement.

  • Battery draining / hard starting in cold weather

    electrics occasional

Some owners report difficulty starting after the bike sits unused for a few weeks or in cold temperatures. The small battery struggles against the immobiliser's constant drain, sometimes failing to hold charge. A trickle charger or battery upgrade is often needed.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the MT-03 is actually built for.

A scenic view of Angeles Crest Highway winding through rugged Southern California canyon terrain. Rocky mountainsides with golden earth tones frame the asphalt road with tight sweeping curves. Double yellow center line visible, sparse vegetation along the shoulders, clear blue sky with white clouds. Daylight, dry conditions. Iconic location for canyon-road enthusiasts.

Best motorcycle for Bay Area?

Weekday traffic and Sunday runs up the ridge are exactly this bike's two jobs. Light enough to enjoy in the city, cheap enough to ride daily. Just know the tech list is thin: ABS, and that is it.

Best motorcycle for Angeles Crest?

If your canyon days are about carrying speed and clean lines, this delivers, because it is light and stays settled. If you measure them in horsepower, 42 hp becomes your ceiling before the road does.

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

Hill Country twisties suit it well, and 59 mpg from 3.7 gallons keeps fuel stops rare. The long highway transits are the trade: no wind protection, no cruise, and plenty of revs to hold a fast pace.
