990 Duke (MY2024)

The front end is the part I trust quickest. It feeds back enough information that I can carry the brakes deep, settle on a line, and know the bike will honor it without protest. Both ends are adjustable, and once I had the suspension set where I wanted it, the chassis refused to be unsettled under hard load. It never ran wide on me or drifted off its mark. The harder I lean on it, the more it gives back.

Here's where the bike gets under my skin. Standing still it might read as one more midweight naked, but ride it and the twin manufactures excitement at a pace the law barely notices, so an ordinary road feels anything but. The chassis attacks bends with the same appetite. Dial the aids down and there's enough grunt and breadth in the motor to go well past commuting duty, freestyle antics included. It simply does more than the badge on the tank would suggest, and I keep coming back for it.

This is the one box the bike doesn't quite tick. Set against how well everything else performs, the outright stopping power at the lever is where a few of us wanted more, and it stands out precisely because the standard everywhere else runs so high. The cornering ABS, though, is a genuine asset; knowing it's there gives me margin to scrub speed in the middle of a bend without drama. I'd also sample the brakes on the actual bike you're considering, because they didn't feel identical from one example to the next.

What stays with me is how usable the power is right across the rev range. Short-shift it or hold a gear too long and it barely matters; the twin keeps hauling with no flat spot until the road runs out. Cracking the throttle open mid-corner brings none of the abruptness I brace for on lesser setups, and that credit goes straight to how well the fueling and electronics are calibrated. The quickshifter is the highlight when I'm pressing hard, firing off upshifts without a break in drive. Where it lets itself down is the mechanical side of the box. Feeding through the lever, the action feels rough and stiff in a way that undercuts an otherwise polished package, and on the way back down the automatic blip doesn't fully match revs, so each lower gear lands with a small kick I can feel. A touch more fuel in that downshift map would sort it.

KTM draws more than its share of angry reliability talk, and it shows up loudly across our channels in both languages. I get why that noise makes people hesitate. But I can only report what we've lived: put serious mileage on a handful of these and the breakdowns those threads warn about simply haven't surfaced for us. I won't dress that up as a promise. What I will say is that I'd weight hands-on time over comment-section drama and keep a healthy skepticism about the worst of the stories.

Living with the 990 day to day, what strikes me first is that nothing about the controls asks for patience. Each rider aid sets independently, and I never once found myself fighting a menu to get where I wanted. The switches meet your thumb with real solidity, and the display stays legible and logically arranged. My one honest reservation is the physical size. The cockpit sits close and compact, which smaller and average riders will love, but anyone tall should log real seat time before signing.

For something this focused, it's remarkably willing to do dull jobs. The same perch that suits a committed ride also carries me through a routine trip to the office without complaint, and the suspension keeps a settled enough character that clocking regular miles doesn't wear on me. A lot of hard-edged nakeds force a trade between weekend thrills and weekday usefulness. This one declines to make me pick, and that's genuinely uncommon in the segment.
