MV Agusta Dragster 800 RR Pirelli Buyer's Guide

The Machine's Character

The Dragster 800 RR Pirelli is a limited-run version of MV's short, stubby naked, built around the 798 cc inline-three making 140 hp and 64 lb-ft. The Pirelli treatment brings its own livery, rubber tank sliders and inserts, and Supercorsa SP tires wrapped around that fat 200/55-17 rear. Underneath sits real hardware: fully adjustable suspension front and rear, a steering damper, a slipper clutch, and a quickshifter that works both up and down. ABS, traction control and ride modes are standard. In the hyper naked class it is the small, sharp, loud one rather than the biggest hammer.

In the twisties it makes sense immediately. It steers light, holds a deep lean angle, and the triple pulls hard enough to keep any honest rider busy on a canyon road, with top-end reach that keeps going long after you expected it to sign off. It rewards a rider who wants character over comfort. The caveats are real: the sprag clutch can slip or fail and leave you with hard starts or an ugly graunch on the button, and the 33.3 in seat plus stiff setup makes it a poor fit for anyone whose riding is mostly commuting and highway miles. Buy it for what it is.

The Truth on the Street

This isn't my own riding impression. It's what I've gathered over the years from owners in the paddock, from club-night talk, from long chats in parking lots, and from the emails and messages riders send me once they've lived with one. For the Dragster 800 RR Pirelli, the pattern is clear. Owners love what happens high in the revs and in a run of corners, and most of their complaints come up when the pace drops, the road gets rough, or traffic closes in.

Hooked on the top of the tach

The praise owners repeat most is about the triple once it passes 8,000 rpm. They describe a real rush from there all the way to the redline, and they talk about the intake howl almost as much as the pull itself. The two-way quickshifter comes up nearly as often. Riders say that clean shifts in both directions are what turn hard riding into a habit. The handling gets the same kind of credit. Owners call it flickable and neutral, a bike they trust to go exactly where they point it through a series of bends.

Kinder over distance than expected

Some owners report something the stance doesn't suggest: they can ride it all day. They credit the bar angle, the room for their legs and a seat that supports them over long stints. A similar group points to the finish and calls the paint, the detail work and the materials top-notch.

Where owners lose patience

The recurring gripes gather around slow riding. At town speeds, riders say the firm setup makes the bike feel unsettled whenever the surface turns rough. Below 5,000 rpm many find the engine flat, so they drop a gear to get real thrust, and some compare it unfavorably with twin-cylinder rivals. Some owners find the clutch pull and the throttle spring heavy enough to tire smaller hands in stop-and-go traffic. The limited steering lock makes U-turns and parking-lot maneuvers a chore. A smaller group also mention a nervous front end at very high speed.

Known issues

Sprag clutch / starter motor failures

engine occasional

The sprag clutch can slip or fail, leading to difficult starts or a loud graunching noise when cranking. This issue was prevalent on earlier Euro3 models but still occasionally reported on Euro4 bikes.
Low-speed surging / hesitation

engine common

Between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm the engine can surge or hunt, causing jerky throttle response. MV Agusta released an ECU update under warranty to address this.
Front-end instability at speed

chassis occasional

The handlebars exhibit a persistent wagging motion at high speed, never fully escalating, but eroding rider confidence. Not universally reported but noted in period press tests.
Turn signal LED failure

electrics rare

The LED blinker on the floating fender can fail prematurely. Replacement with aftermarket units is a common owner fix.

Best motorcycle for Angeles Crest?

Angeles Crest is exactly where this bike makes sense: light steering, huge lean angle, and a triple that keeps pulling. Just budget for the firm ride on the broken sections up top.

Best motorcycle for Tail of the Dragon?

On the Dragon and the Cherohala this thing flicks side to side with almost no effort, which is the whole game there. The low-rpm surging is worth checking on a test ride.

Best motorcycle for Texas Hill Country?

Great for a hard Saturday on the Twisted Sisters, less great for the miles of straight road getting there. The seat is tall and the suspension is stiff, so plan the route around the fun parts.
