The Six-Cylinder Rolling Sculpture

The Machine's Character

The Rune is what you get when Honda lets a design concept reach the showroom almost untouched. It was hand-built in limited numbers. Its liquid-cooled 1832 cc flat-six comes from the Gold Wing but was heavily reworked, with six individual throttle bodies, its own cams and a tuned exhaust. Chrome-heavy, seamless bodywork runs from the trailing-link fork back to the shaft drive. The engine makes 112 hp and 123 lb-ft, but the figures matter less than the fact that nothing else in the cruiser world looks like this. It is rolling sculpture, and Honda built it properly.

Up to speed, the long 68.9 in (1750 mm) wheelbase keeps the Rune locked down and calm on the highway, and the finish holds up to close inspection year after year. It suits the rider who wants presence and craftsmanship more than practicality. There's no ABS, no luggage and no suspension adjustment. The honest caveat sits in the electrics. Throttle position sensor and ECM failures are a known pattern that can leave the bike stranded, and some bikes crank but won't restart after a hot soak. Buy it for what it is, and budget for sorting the sensors.

A long, straight paved road stretches toward the horizon through agricultural fields in Vermont. Power lines and a mailbox are visible along the roadside. Known issues

  • Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and ECM failures

    fuel system occasional

Multiple owners report repeated throttle position sensor failures causing rough idle, hesitation, and engine stalling, with issues occasionally tied to the engine control module. The defect can leave the motorcycle stranded.

  • Warm-engine no-start condition

    electrics rare

Some owners experience the engine cranking but failing to restart after a hot soak, sometimes with the radiator fan having been active. Suspected causes include a heat-sensitive crankshaft position sensor or ignition power loss. The issue temporarily resolves when the bike cools down.

The 'Should I Buy It?' Score

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the NRX 1800 Rune is actually built for.

Aerial view of a winding asphalt road cutting through volcanic terrain on La Gomera, Canary Islands. The road curves through sparse green vegetation with rocky volcanic peaks visible in the background and a settled valley to the left. Clear lane markings, dry climate, partly cloudy sky.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

If you ride to Sturgis or Daytona to be seen and heard, the Rune will stop more people than anything else on the street. It's a smooth flat-six rumble, not a V-twin beat, so come for the rarity.

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

It's smooth, stable and more comfortable than it looks, but there's no luggage and no cruise control. For big park loops it works as a stylish solo tourer. Just carry light and know your dealer.

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

On an easy back-road day through small towns it glides along and turns every stop into a conversation. It's futuristic rather than classic, though, and heavy in tight village parking.
