Blacked-Out Muscle, Drag-Strip Soul
The Night Rod takes the Revolution engine and wraps it in matte black instead of chrome. That means a liquid-cooled 60° V-twin, 1131 cc, 119 hp and 80 lb-ft, figures that read more like a muscle car than a boulevard bike. The rest follows the same hot rod logic: long and low, a 19-inch front wheel, a 26.0 in seat, belt final drive, five speeds. It belongs to the cruiser class on stance and attitude, then quietly outruns most of what parks next to it, with 144 mph on the far end of the tach.
At 629 lb wet the mass sits low enough that the bike feels planted rather than heavy once it is rolling, and the finish is good enough to survive a close look. It ages well if you stay on top of the exposed hardware, which is the one place time shows first. This one is for the rider who wants Harley presence with liquid-cooled manners and no chrome. The honest caveat: 3.7 gal and 31 mpg leave you hunting fuel around 110 miles, the fork has no adjustment of any kind, the rear gives you preload and nothing else, and there is no ABS, no traction control, no cruise control.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

What follows isn't from a spec sheet. It's what I've picked up over years of listening to riders: conversations in parking lots and paddocks, club nights, and the steady stream of messages and emails that land in my inbox from people who actually own these bikes. On the Night Rod the chatter lands in a consistent place. Owners talk about the engine and the way it holds together, then they talk about how far they can get before the next fuel stop.
The Revolution motor draws the most praise by a wide margin. Riders call it strong and unusually willing to rev for a cruiser, with real passing power, and they report it holding up over the long haul. That reliability talk extends to the whole machine: thick paint, solid components, fit and finish that owners say meets a high standard. Two other themes recur often. Riders find the bike more responsive than its size suggests, and the front brakes get consistent credit for stopping power that many riders had not expected from a cruiser of this era. The blacked-out look comes up again and again as the reason people bought it in the first place.
The tank is the recurring gripe. Riders put usable range at around 130 miles and describe the fuel stops as a nuisance once the day gets long. Weight comes up too, mostly at walking pace, where owners say it takes muscle to move around. Several mention the seat going thin on support after about an hour, and swapping it out is a common fix. A smaller group flags the valve-adjustment service as a labor-heavy, expensive item when it comes due.
Fuel gauge failure
The in-tank fuel level sensor often stops working, giving a permanently empty reading. Cleaning the sensor unit or replacing it is a known fix.
Rear brake switch melting
The rear brake switch is positioned close to the exhaust and can melt, causing loss of rear brake light. Replacing with an updated banjo bolt (P/N 72025-06) is a common fix.
Rust on bolts
Some owners note early surface rust on fasteners and exposed hardware, detracting from the otherwise high-end finish.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the V-Rod Night Rod VRSCD is actually built for.
For Sturgis and Daytona this delivers presence and a sound of its own, though a blacked-out liquid-cooled bike. The 3.7 gal tank means you plan fuel stops the group may not need.
Made for Florida State Road A1A · Black Hills · Main Street, Daytona Beach
The style here is hot rod, not heritage Americana. Great for a day of small towns and easy pace, but the forward reach and short range fight you on long, slow routes.
Made for Park Loop Road · Handbuilt Motorcycle Show · Blue Ridge Parkway
Not the bike for Going-to-the-Sun and back. Around 110 miles per tank, no cruise control, luggage only as an option, and a wind-exposed drag posture two-up.
Made for Beartooth Highway · Blue Ridge Parkway · Going-to-the-Sun Road
If this one isn't quite the fit, these are the bikes worth riding back-to-back against it.
Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Harley-Davidson V-Rod Night Rod VRSCD. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
