The Blacked-Out American Classic
This is the touring platform stripped to its essentials. The Milwaukee-Eight 114 fills the frame with 1868 cc of air- and oil-cooled 45° V-twin, good for 93 hp and a thick 118 lb-ft, fed through a six-speed gearbox and a belt to the rear wheel. There's no fairing, no stereo, no screen full of menus. What you get instead is hard saddlebags, a commanding upright post, and blacked-out metal from the headlamp to the pipes. In a class that lives on stance and mechanical presence, this one plants its flag firmly on the old-school American bagger end of the room.
It rides like what it is: a heavy, low-slung mile-eater that trades agility for stability and substance. The low center of gravity and 64.0 in wheelbase keep it planted and confident once you're rolling, and the mechanical feel gives it a character that never turns sterile. It's built for the rider who wants the big-twin experience without the bulk of a full dresser. The honest caveat sits with the engine. Some Milwaukee-Eight 114 units have shown heavy oil consumption and early lifter noise, so a careful look at any bike's history is money well spent.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

This isn't pulled from a brochure. It's the sense that builds over years of listening to riders: talk at rallies and gas stops, conversations on club nights, and the notes that land in my inbox. On the Road King Special the pattern holds steady. The praise clusters around the look and the engine; the gripes stay few and familiar.
Style leads every conversation. That stripped custom look, blacked out from headlamp to pipes with thin chrome accents and no fairing, reads to owners as the real thing and sets it apart. Close behind comes the big V-twin's low-end torque, enough to make passing and hills feel easy on a rumble riders enjoy. Some add that the deep, contoured seat carries them through long days without fatigue.
The complaints run fewer and softer, but they persist. With no wind protection out front, owners feel fully exposed, and fatigue builds over long highway stretches. A handful aren't sold on the cable clutch, reading the move away from a hydraulic setup as less fitting for a touring bike. Others note the reduced cornering clearance once the pace quickens, where floorboards and bag guards drag sooner than they'd like.
Milwaukee‑Eight engine oil consumption and lifter noise
Some owners report excessive oil burning and premature lifter failure on M8 114 engines, possibly linked to oil pump or breather issues; severity varies.
ECM data port blocks aftermarket tuners
The new ECM data port introduced in 2021 is incompatible with existing aftermarket EFI tuners, forcing owners to use the restricted Harley‑Davidson Screamin’ Eagle tuner or wait for updated third‑party solutions.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Touring Road King Special FLHRXS is actually built for.
If your year runs through Sturgis and Daytona and the badge matters as much as the ride, this lands right where you want it: real presence, the right voice, and a parts catalog with no bottom.
Made for Florida State Road A1A · Black Hills · Main Street, Daytona Beach
For slow days on historic two-lanes it looks the part and sounds it too. Just know you're signing up for 807 lb, so it's more heavyweight classic than easy-going retro runabout.
Made for Park Loop Road · Handbuilt Motorcycle Show · Blue Ridge Parkway
It's rock-steady at highway speed and swallows gear in the hard bags, but with no fairing and thin weather protection, loaded two-up over big country you'll work harder for comfort than a full dresser asks.
Made for Beartooth Highway · Blue Ridge Parkway · Going-to-the-Sun Road
If you're cross-shopping the older generation, here's what changed.
