The Peanut Tank Street Brawler
Strip a Sportster back to its bones and this is what's left. The Forty-Eight Special runs the 1202 cc air-cooled 45° V-twin at 66 hp and 71 lb-ft, hung in a short 58.9 in (1495 mm) frame with a fat 130/90-16 up front and a 2.1 gal (7.9 L) peanut tank sitting on top of it. Seventies tank graphics, forward controls, a 27.8 in (706 mm) seat. Nothing on it argues for practicality. It is a factory custom built to be looked at and to be heard, and it sits at the top of its class on chopper style for good reason.
On the road it does the one thing it was drawn to do. Torque arrives early, the belt drive keeps the delivery clean, and at 564 lb (256 kg) the mass sits low enough that it never feels top-heavy at a stoplight. It holds a line at highway speed better than the stubby wheelbase suggests. This is a bike for short, loud, deliberate rides: bar to bar, coast road, downtown on a Friday night. The honest caveat is the tank. 2.1 gal at 48 mpg puts a hard ceiling on how far you get, and no amount of character fixes that.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Sportster XL 1200XS Forty-Eight Special is actually built for.
The ride is the ritual, and this one holds up at the rally: right stance, right sound, right attitude. Plan the day in short legs, because the 2.1 gal tank sets the schedule.
Made for Black Hills / Sturgis Rally Hub · A1A — Florida Atlantic Coast · Daytona Main Street / Bike Week
The look and the mechanical character are exactly what you want on a two-lane. Day rides and overnight loops work well; anything longer turns into a hunt for the next pump.
Made for Acadia National Park · Austin / Handbuilt Motorcycle Show · Blue Ridge Parkway
Honest answer: no. Long distances, luggage and two-up riding are the opposite of what this bike was drawn for, starting with the 2.1 gal tank and the stripped-back equipment.

Any price note compares both bikes at the same age — the youngest age both have on the used market — against this Harley-Davidson Sportster XL 1200XS Forty-Eight Special. “cheaper/pricier” is what that bike costs second-hand, not how worn it is.
