Blacked-Out Fat Boy Built Different
The Fat Boy Special runs Harley's air-cooled 1690cc Twin Cam, a 45-degree V-twin that lays down 97 lb-ft low at 3,250 rpm and 77 hp through a six-speed box and a clean belt drive. The whole machine is built around presence. Blacked-out engine, wheels, and trim give it a dark, muscular look, and the hidden rear suspension holds that rigid hardtail silhouette without going fully bare. This is a factory custom in the truest sense, a fat, low, deliberately heavy bike that earns a perfect mark for chopper stance and reads as custom straight off the floor.
On the road it plays exactly to type. The 24.3-inch seat drops you low, and while 728 lb is real weight, the low center of gravity settles it once you roll. Build quality holds up to close inspection, which matters on a bike this bold. It suits the rider who wants stance and sound ahead of sport. The honest caveats sit in the details. A safety recall covered front brake master cylinder corrosion, the lifters have a reputation for wearing early and getting noisy up top, and ABS is an option here rather than standard equipment.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

Safety
Front brake master cylinder corrosion (safety recall)
The banjo bolt threads on the front brake master cylinder may corrode, causing a brake fluid leak and a loss of front brake performance. A safety recall was issued for 2012 Softail and Dyna models, including the Fat Boy Lo, requiring inspection and master cylinder replacement if necessary.
Premature lifter and cam bearing wear
The 'C' lifters (p/n 18538-99C) introduced in 2011 are considered substandard compared to the earlier 'B' lifters, with reports of excessive wear leading to top‑end noise and potential failure. The INA caged inner cam bearings are also a known weak point, though the larger B‑168 bearings in later Twin Cams are more reliable. Many owners upgrade to aftermarket lifters and captive needle bearings when the cam chest is opened.

Forget spec-sheet bragging. Here's who the Softail Fat Boy Special FLSTFB is actually built for.
If your riding runs on sound, community, and rolling into Sturgis or Daytona with real presence, this is your bike. The stance and the voice are exactly what you came for.
Made for Florida State Road A1A · Black Hills · Main Street, Daytona Beach
For easy days on historic routes and quiet main streets, it looks the part and cruises relaxed. Just know it leans on style and low-end pull, not light, nimble handling.
Made for Park Loop Road · Handbuilt Motorcycle Show · Blue Ridge Parkway
It can eat highway miles in comfort and looks great doing it, but the 5.0-gal tank and 728 lb loaded two-up make it a stylish cruiser first, not a dedicated long-hauler.
