Slammed, Blacked-Out, Built Mean
The Fat Boy Special takes the lowest, meanest spot in Harley's Softail range and commits to it fully. Seat height sits at just 24.3 in, the front end is deliberately wide and heavy, and the whole bike wears a blacked-out, stripped-down finish that reads as factory custom without a single aftermarket part fitted. Underneath is the 1584 cc air-cooled 45-degree V-twin, tuned for 94 lb-ft and 66 hp, paired to a six-speed box and quiet belt drive. This is a machine built around stance and attitude first, and it never pretends otherwise.
On the road that low center of gravity does real work, settling all 730 lb (331 kg) into a planted, unhurried gait that flatters relaxed riding more than hurried inputs. Build quality is genuinely high, the kind that survives close inspection and years of weather, so this generation ages with dignity rather than cheapening. Be clear-eyed about the trade: 66 hp is modest muscle for the size, low-speed parking-lot work asks for respect, and some early 2011 bikes fell under a body control module recall for water intrusion that could stall the engine. Buy it for character, not urgency.
Spec sheets don't ride bikes, but they set the baseline.

Over the years I've kept a running tally of what riders tell me about the Fat Boy Special: conversations in the pits, talk at club nights, owners I've caught up with along the way, and the questions readers send me directly. Boil it all down and the same picture returns. People buy this one for the styling and the effortless low-rev pull, and a small set of quirks comes up again and again.
Two themes dominate the praise. Riders keep coming back to the fat, blacked-out custom stance that shows up straight from the factory, with no aftermarket parts required to earn it. Just as often they point to the tractable low-end grunt of the big twin, easy to meter through town and enough for a relaxed highway pass. The very low seat gets its own steady mention too, letting shorter riders and those with a short inseam flat-foot with room to spare.
The recurring grumbles stay small and consistent. A strong side wind gets under those solid wheels and calls for a steadier grip at pace, though owners say experienced hands adjust fast. A few find the forward controls and floorboard placement leave them reaching on longer hauls. And the side stand sits awkwardly close to that left board, so dropping it takes a deliberate foot and a beat of care.
Body Control Module (BCM) failure
On some early MY2011 Softail models (built June through October 2010), the body control module (BCM) case may not have been properly sealed, letting water intrude and cause the engine to stall — a stall in traffic risks a crash. Under the safety recall, dealers replace the BCM free of charge.

Made for Florida State Road A1A · Black Hills · Main Street, Daytona Beach
The style and unhurried rhythm suit your slow routes and historic main streets. Just know it rides heavy and low, so it rewards easy cruising over quick, flickable back-road play.
Made for Park Loop Road · Handbuilt Motorcycle Show · Blue Ridge Parkway
Honest answer: it has the presence but not the kit for your kind of days. The 5.0 gal tank, low seat, and missing wind protection make big two-up national-park hauls a stretch.
