The Road-Ready Dyna Canvas

The Machine's Character

The FXDXT takes the Dyna Super Glide and gives it a wider job description. Harley-Davidson built the T-Sport from 2001 to 2003 around a steel tube frame and an air-cooled 1449 cc, 45° V-twin rated at 67 hp at 5,200 rpm and 73 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm. Those figures put the muscle low in the rev range, and that's exactly where a big Harley twin should carry it. What lifts this one above a pure boulevard cruiser is the kit: adjustable suspension front and rear plus an adjustable windscreen, all standard. Belt final drive keeps the chain mess out of your life. A cruiser with ambitions!

It's long, low and heavy by design: 665 lb (302 kg) wet on a 64.2 in (1,631 mm) wheelbase, with the seat at just 27.4 in (696 mm). On paper that adds up to calm highway miles and steady sweepers. It doesn't point to tight city traffic. The 19-inch front wheel, the adjustable screen and a 4.8 gal (18.2 L) tank all point to day trips that run long. Then there's the look. It's characterful and retro, and the platform gives you about as much to work with as any if you like to make a bike your own. Your garage, your rules.

A long, straight paved road stretches toward the horizon through agricultural fields in Vermont. Power lines and a mailbox are visible along the roadside. Lush green vegetation, cumulus clouds, good daylight conditions. The landscape is flat to gently rolling. Asphalt pavement appears to be in good condition. Rural American setting.

Known issues

  • Stator retaining screws loosening and stator failure

    electrics occasional

The stator retaining screws can back out over time. A loose stator can shift into contact with the spinning rotor inside the primary, which destroys the windings and kills the charging system. The battery then runs down and the bike can lose ignition and stall while riding.

Best cruiser for Sturgis?

This is your best fit: a big air-cooled Harley V-twin, a look made for parking out front, and a screen for the ride to Sturgis or Daytona. Bolt on your own parts, then go.

Made for Florida State Road A1A · Black Hills · Main Street, Daytona Beach

Best retro motorcycle for road trips?

A strong match if you like an unhurried pace and classic lines. The low seat and torque-led twin suit back roads between small towns, though at 665 lb it's more cruiser than lightweight classic.

Made for Park Loop Road · Handbuilt Motorcycle Show · Blue Ridge Parkway

Best touring motorcycle for long distance?

A workable fit for big days out. The adjustable screen and a chassis built for stability help on long routes, but there's no cruise control, and the 4.8 gal tank means planning fuel stops in the parks.

Made for Beartooth Highway · Blue Ridge Parkway · Going-to-the-Sun Road
